They said it shouldn't be done: Iso cabs for serious guitar

Guitar iso cabs usually get a thumbs down from most guitarists, yet you'd expect to see so many more reviews and pictures on the Internet. So just go with hearsay? Hell no.

We did a small test with a Rivera Silent Sister Iso Cab.

Tones start at 3.36, but there's playing interspersed throughout and I gradually raise the volume of the recorded tone. I really hiked the volume around the 8.00 mark, so you can hear the tone through the monitors clearly.

There's also the sound of the cab itself in the room, and you can also compare the tone when run through a preamp and compressor versus just the raw tone. Equipment used is described in the video.

No product is being endorsed in this video, and I have received no payments, just wanted to offer a review of what an iso cab tone can sound like! Cheers!

As I've always said, ". . . it shouldn't be done: Iso cabs for serious guitar".

Hope this saves you some time and $ in the future.

Good luck.

Yeah, but who are you?

"Them"? :gethim:

I like to think I get reasonably good guitar tones.

Around the 9.30-mark in the video, you can hear the tone through the monitors without any processing. Perhaps that will help you hear what you are looking for.

Remember, the guitar is not double tracked, it is just a single guitar being recorded. I will try and reamp something tonight so that you can hear a double tracked tone.

I built a copy of the Randall iso12c back when I first started recording but never used it. I get by just fine with amp sims.

I've been recording with my homebrew iso cabs for a couple decades. I'm now down to just one cab, which stays parked at my drummer's studio. It's had a Redback in it since those came out. That little white tube is a homebrew mic shockmount, made from PVC pipe and small bungee cords. Records like a dream.

That's a cool cab

EDIT: Recording was horrible, I botched it, so I've removed it.

My buddy uses an iso cab live and hates it. I keep trying to get him to switch to the new way, which is a reactive load and IR
