Thinking of going 5150...

Both are great, but I'd go with the II.
Less tubes, smaller head size, great proven Metal/Hard Rock tone.

ive always been a 5150 player and like the iiis so much more than both peavey versions

idk about the mod though, never had one

I played a used Peavey 5150 2x12 combo at GC the other day....and WOW what a killer tone! I was going to buy it but DAMN that sucker was way too heavy...weighs a ton!!

Mods make things much harder to unload and can be hard to prove any actual value increase. 5150 III would do what you need between the two.

I will say i love my 5150 II modified, but i highly suggest going the 5150 III route instead if you're unsure. I am not new to 5150's and have played or owned them all at some point so i was sure about what i wanted out of the amplifier before i put it under the knife. Doing it the opposite way can have unintended results.

This. Exactly this.

So much talk about 5150's on this forum. Might have to actually try one...

I know right?! They're on so many damn records that I love. I've owned just about everything but a 5150. So why not?

I've owned every version of 5150 there is...my favorite is the 2x12 combo. Plug it into your favorite 4x12, and dime the gain in the crunch channel while in the low gain input. Then get ready for an orgasm.

I liked my old 6505+ quite a bit but am interested in trying a 5150 III at some point to see the differences.

I also want to try a 6534+ to see how the EL34 power section changes the tone.

I'd go with the Peavey. I bought a new III a while back and it lasted about a week here. I prefer the Peavey platform. YMMV

III by a mile. It's a much more refined/versatile version. I've owned them all and the III is far and away the best one.

I highly recommend the 5150 III. I've owned the original 5150, and played a friends 5150 II several times. The III just sounds better.

Same here. Just didn't lik the III but really like the PV versions. I got my 5150II modded by Jerry at FJA and the amps is AWESOME!!!

I've got a evh 5150III mini I'd like to sell if you're interested, minty fresh...maybe 12 hours of playing on it. It's black, and it'll be packed in its original box, with footswitch and manual.

5150III for me.

I agree that out of the peavy versions I like the combo but only plugged into a 4x12. The III just sounds better to my ears, even through a 2x12.

Yea, the combo plugged into a 4x12 is tits! On its own it's mediocre.
