This guy was offered the job in Motley before Mick

With some bands, it isn't about being the best guitar player in the world, it is how you fit. Mick IS Motley Crue. The same was with Ace Frehley. He was perfect for KISS and exactly what the sound needed. Lars with Metallica, etc. I think you vibe with people and that is a huge part of the overall sound and feel.
You’re exactly right. Chemistry cannot be overlooked. Think how the sound of these bands was never the same after these folks were no longer there:
Steve Clarke - Def Leppard (Clarke was THE sound of classic DL)
Steven Adler - Guns N’ Roses (Adler had swing)
Robin Crosby - Ratt (central to the writing)
Micheal Anthony - Van Halen (those background vocals are essential)
Dave Mustaine/Cliff Burton (Metallica’s first two albums were majority Mustaine riffs; Burton brought the classical/theory driven material)

I agree and I don't believe Trippe's story - he probably believed it but from what people who knew him said, I think he had some major issues, sadly, and just latched-on to this Nikki fantasy.
I stopped believing what he was saying when the host kept prompting him with parts of "his" story.. initially he would disagree, then do a 180° and then elaborate on the thing he just said never happened.

He sounds/acts like every addict I've ever dealt with. Once the hard drugs get ahold of a person, they fry their central nervous system and they all talk just like this guy.
