This is the sound in my head! What can get me there?

I'm researching 15-20 watt amps that will give me that plexi classic rock, up to early EVH vibe. This particular one is a kit. Although I'm fairly competent with soldering, I'm not sure if I'm ready to build an amp from scratch.

Splawn Super Sport is the first thing that comes to mind. I've never been able to play one but listing to the clips, it will do exactly what you're after.

I'm sure with the 6+ threads you have across 4 forums asking the same question, you're bound to find something.

I like to post on the different forums because I don't know if everyone is on every forum. Plus, I like to research everyone's recommendations.

How bout a Pink Taco or Runt 20? That video states its modded to Jose/Friedman specs..Just get a Friedman..

Plexi classic rock sound? You answered your own question.

THIS! A quickrod in a smaller package with 6V6 that sound more like a regular 6L6 verus the issue with EL84 tubes usually used in mini amps.

All the tones are in there from vintage to modern and it's close to your price range and all your requirements like a loop plus channel switching from lower gain plexi to higher gain 800 tones.

After all these years I still love my Splawn modded Marshall.

I would prob go with a small clean amp like Vox AC15/Fender Deluxe and use a BE-OD Deluxe. But I want that clean tone to go with the other tones mentioned. And it must have a bright switch (so you can turn it OFF), very important imo.

I use a homebuilt Trainwreck Rocket head + 1x12" G12-65 cab with a pedalboard for jams/band and low-volume home use. Pretty much every tone/effect I want is right there and it's small, light, simple. Sometimes I wonder why I keep anything else.

Probably out of your price range but this RJS mini amp sounds pretty good as well.

I had a Quickrod several years ago. Although it was a great amp, it just wasn't for me. It had a stiffness to it that I just couldn't jive with.

Classic rock and early VH vibe would be the VOX AC15 Heritage edition, no question about it. Get yourself a Crowther Double Hot Cake, 68 Pedals KOT clone, Boss EQ pedal, Phase 90, ADA small box flanger, and a T Rex Replicator Jr for tape echo. Doesn't get anymore classic/VH than that in a small rig. Remember, Ed didn't play a MV amp in those days. He did on VHII, but hated the result, so he pulled the MV mod out of it. If not the AC15 Heritage, the Marshall SV20 will get you there as well.

What's the difference between the regular AC15 and the Heritage?

I don't think the SV20 will get him there. It's not focused or tight in the least. Even with a boost, I dunno.. I found it a loose, sloppy mess.

And way too loud for what I'm looking for.
