Thoughts on Peavey Classic 120 Poweramp

Hi Guys,
I've seen a peavey classic 120 and tg raxx pre for sale locally for a good price.
Im not too worried about the pre as i have a Soldano SP77 and Peavey Rockmaster already, but like the idea of a Mono Power Amp, and haven't been digging the soldano through EL34's in my Marshall 9005, but it sounded good when run into a 5150 effects return.

Has anyone had experience with these? never seen one come up for sale before, usually just the classic 50/50s. Let me know if this is worth a coupla hundred bucks, or are they best to be avoided.

They usually last forever, built like a tank and don't sound bad at all.
The only downside is they are heavy, other than that killer power section.

The Peavey classic 120 mono power is cool. I'd like to get one myself. I have owned several Peavey power amps over the years. Only thing is that I wish it had the presence and resonance that the EL84 50/50 and 120/120 have. The 60,120 and 60/60 don't have it and the 60/60 can't be bridged like the 50/50. I have also owned the TG Raxx preamp and it is pretty cool too. You can get a great clean tone as well as some decent rock ish type tones. Works great for bass too.

Pretty sure the 120/120 is the only bridgeable model - even the 50/50 does not have that capability - hence the mono 120 model above.

They are great poweramps and are getting very rare. I frequently eyed the peavey forum classifieds and had a WTB thread looking for an un-molested model and nothing came up.

Alot of people are hacking into them as well or you generally find them in bad shape due to their old age.

On that note i will say that if you get the poweramp i would be prepared to warn you it is overdue for a cap job. It has been well over 20 years since service most likely and will need some TLC. Dont let it stop you from getting it - they are built great and sound really good.
