VH I is classic hard rock, side note Michael Anthony recently said the tone in the room was nothing like the post production or what we hear on the album. Likely harsh and top end heavy

To me most Scorpions Marshal tones from Animal magnetism to Big city nights was some of the best tones ever

Ratt Invasion of your privacy is at the top too!

Ac Dc back in black cannot be beat for lower gain tones ala Mutt

Lastly Def Leppard Hi n Dry is pretty dang good too.

I will let you categorize all the many sub genres of 'Metal' and all these albums have killer lead tone as well! :m17:

^nice dude. I swear I typed mine while you were typing yours and did not peak. Was not sure where to put Invasion album but I don't consider it classic rock. Good call outs on Scorps and Leppard

- Greatest rock / classic rock recorded rhythm guitar tone of all time? Van Halen - Fair Warning

- Greatest hard rock / modern rock recorded rhythm guitar tone of all time? Ratt - Invasion of your Privacy

- Greatest traditional metal recorded rhythm guitar tone of all time? Metallica - Master of Puppets

Classic Rock was the hardest but Fair Warning is one of my fav albums of all time so I threw that in there. Honorable mentions would be Led Zeppelin IV and Physical Graffiti, Ted Nugent, Montrose, Kansas, ZZ Top, Boston, ACDC, shit the list goes on and on

1.

Buzzy, ugly, raw, and perfect - and because of the era, it's actually a bit ahead of its time

2.

Classic Luke. Fits the song perfectly.

3.

It's tight, it's luscious, it's complex, and it's the best rhythm tone ever, of any genre. Larry plus Jon is one of the best musical combinations ever to happen

4.

I fucking hate most modern tones but this is really good, and PERFECT for the music. The engl preamp is one of those things I would 100% own if I could find a decent deal on one.

5.

Solo beginning at around 3:00 in - engl/H&K goodness plus killer KILLER playing.

1. Classic Rock AC/DC Back in Black
2. Hard Rock Accept Balls to the Wall
3. Metal Mercyful Fate Egypt
4. Modern Metal. Nothing
5. Best Lead Tone. Deep Purple Wasted Sunset

- Greatest modern metal / extreme metal recorded rhythm guitar tone of all time?

(I don't know this category well enough to have a valid opinion)

1. Classic/Hard Rock - VHII
2. Hard Rock/Modern Rock - Tool ‘The Pot’
3. Metal-MOP
4. Modern Metal-not sure lol
5. Lead tone-Wasted Time Skid Row
Could not possibly agree more with numbers 1 and 5. Wasted Time is not only the best lead tone but one of the best leads ever. Scotti Hill is criminally underrated and not much mentioned even though the first two Skid Row records are legendary.

I don't know what good high gain tone would be ideally but for hard rock I would say Angus and Slash are both pretty killer. Angus' tone is unbelievably massive and crushing, as was Malcolm's rhythm sound and Slash just has that classic LP into Marshall which is always enjoyable in terms of leads and rhythms.
