They say you want less gain when recording but listening to my clips, I just want to add more? Here are some with way more boost to the front of a stock 2204 into 6402 greenbacks; SM57.

6 and 7 string chugging

7 and 8 string chugging

Some 8 string rhythmic stuff

I'm the same way when it comes to recording. Love that growl you are getting.

Those clips sound great man, and I’m sure that’d be more than enough gain in a mix. What pickups was that?

It's a Dimarzio PAF 8. I'd been using higher output pickups but a few months ago I decided to try lower output stuff.

Listening in the room, the gain/saturation seemed over the top but in the recording it sounds much better to me. Been interesting making clips.

Like I also tend to prefer using V30s when just listening in the room, but recorded with an SM57, I kinda prefer these G12Ms.

Who is “they”? Forget all that. If it sounds good with more gain, use more gain! No rules man.all the “rules” go out the window if it sounds great to you, all that matters.

I always thought it was more to the point of; "dude you'd be surprised how LOW the gain was when they recorded (enter album here)."

Nice clips though! Sounds good to me.

Welcome to the rabbit hole man, wait till you start adding bass and drums lol. Seriously though, take in all the information you will hear or see but make your own decisions, it took me a while to “de-program” myself from a lot of myths I find completely untrue

With Marshall label V30s instead of the G12M. I have two 1960AVs; I used the brighter one.

Riff 2:

Riff 3:

At least the way I had the mic in all of these (on axis, just off the dust cap), I prefer the V30s. More forward; less murky.

Same riff and guitar/amp set up but with a Mesa OS412. I have two. I used the brighter one.

Think I'm liking the 1960AV most.

Lower gain grind is best when your right hand controls the power amp because it’s so opened up.

Not double tracked and not double boosted. Just an SD-1 with the level up and the gain around 8:30. But the 2204 volume was up to 6, which is quite loud. Had the house empty for a moment so I could do it, but fingers were so cold from 20 degree weather here. But with the volume up on the amp, no need for double boosting. This is the 1960AV.
