nice! but not worth the 600 mile drive to WV :)
Looks like there's a couple in WV. Might be worth the shipping if Lowes is charging that much. Beautiful state btw!

Edit: NM I see, to WV.

Sounds good. After messing with shingles a few times I did a metal roof on my current place. It might be worth looking into to go along with your solar arrangement when the time comes. A few bucks more but if you are staying permanently you'll never deal with a roof again unless a storm blows it off. Only downside is it's noisier when it rains. Good luck with your projecting, it's nice to hear you share. And be safe.

I had thought about a home improvement thread since about 30 percent of my life consists of that right now, more previously. My favorite part is building decks, hands down. Small buildings after that. Getting creative with a hammer and some boards. There is a lot of enjoyment in new construction for me.

The house I'm in now is a family house, so I sort of feel compelled to fix it up. My grandfather built it in the 50s, my father was born and raised there. We moved in a few years ago after my grandmother went in to a nursing home. We wanted to keep the house in our family and not deal with renting it, so I took it over. With us living in it now, my kids are the 4th generation to be in it which I think is really nice. It Certainly has "good bones" as they say, but is pretty tight for a family of 4. The basement isn't "finished" but it's dry and has a ton of protentional to make a master suite of sorts down there and let the kiddos have the upstairs when they are a bit older.

My grandfather passed away when I was about 20 or so. I was old enough to have a relationship with him, but it was before I got in to the trades myself, so I didn't get to share that part of his life with him. He was an electrician by trade and a plumber in the navy. It's kinda cool that I am learning about him as I remodel the house. I can see his thought patterns when he did certain repairs or tricky installs. I like to think he's somewhere having a good laugh at me when I'm cussing out the things he "made work" 40 years ago.

Anyways I have a lot of 1, 5 and 10 year plans for the house, and I like to chip away at things to sort of prep for them over time.

so true
rebuilt my house in 08 from the ground up. could not afford it today and probably wouldn't get the HE loan

just paid $22 for a lousy fucking GFCI outlet at Lowes. they were $12 four years ago

good thing I can install it myself. an electrician would have been $150 more for the service call
at this point I wouldn't trust a 20amp GFI that is less than $20. it sucks though.

Bad experience?
nothing catastrophic thankfully, but I’ve had to replace too many “cheap ones”.
Realistically, it is probably a non issue in residential applications, but most of my experience is in Hotels, Apartments, Schools, Office Buildings, etc. Basically places people aren’t mindful of of the building because they don’t have to fix it.
The biggest issue I’ve had is them tripping far too early. Which is much preferable to tripping too late, but when a 20 amp trips at 15, it’s tough to use a hair dryer or a microwave.
I guess in general, they get tired quicker.

I don’t need abstinence to boost my testosterone, all I need are these wire strippers. I think they weigh about as much as a good Les Paul

You find any cool notes or anything in the walls? Whenever we renovate and I build something new in our place I leave a little secret love note to my wife. She'll most likely never see them but someone someday will if they pay attention during a remodel. Most likely my step great grandkids or something.

Mostly mouse turds. I did find an old piece of wood that he must have used to spray paint our house number at some point. The board now has a relief of the numbers on it that I turned in to a step leading off the back deck.

I did find this odd vibrating thing in the attic too..

There was a TGP thread a while back leading up to the reveal because I had no idea what the hell it was

My dad had me put one of his old told toy trucks behind one of the walls we added to one side of the basement though.

What a handsome devil.

I'll bet he'd look great on a bike with a fag hanging out of his mouth... oh wait...
