Tonal differences between a mod and a BE-100 build?

Loaded question, which SLP reissues are the "best" for a donor amp? I have access to a '97 with Dagnall trannies and a '01. Both without the loop.

The earlier version without the loop is said to have a better, less harsh sounding output transformer.
 
Do you think Dagnall's vs. Drakes vs. Mercury OT's make that much of a difference?

Definately. The OT is the heart of your tone. I've had Friedman mods with Drake, Heyboer, and Mercury and they all sounded and felt different.
 
Loaded question, which did you prefer? Or what were the differences?
 
I knew that was coming. :lol: :LOL: To be honest, I liked the Mercury the least. It seemed to smooth out and darken the tone more. The other two sounded like what I think a Marshall should sound like.
 
Yes I hate mercury transformers. Don't care for there sound.
 
Me too. I don't know why guys change out their stock trannies and consider Mercury an "upgrade."
 
I'm not bashing Mercury.....I just didn't care for them with Dave's mod. They sound great in the CCV.

Dave, I'm interested in sending you a super lead, but it has a mercury OT. What would you recommend as a replacement? Or would you be able to supply one?
