Perhaps someone has had both and can tell me what the tonal differences are between these two if any. I am looking for the most organic version of VH4, sweeter not hard or harsh high end. Thanks

Well................... The sound of these two heads are so close that you might try by yourself to haer the difference by yourself...
I've tried a friend's VH4 with EL34 and bought a VH4S (EL34 too) a few weeks later, the only difference I hear is... well, sound has bit more "contour" on VH4S, and the stereo give a good depth feeling... But that is my opinion... Try, sound can't be described in words...

Thanks for the reply. Can you please define what you mean when you say more "contour"? Is yours any smoother or sweeter or anything quantifiable like that? Thanks again for trying to answer my question.

VH4S sounds heavier because it weighs 2lb more

I would think a 50 watt power section compared to a 100 watt would sound at least a little different. Do the VH4S's use the same transformers as the non stereo version? Are there 2 for both power sections (do they share) or are there 4 transformers in the S version. Thanks to those trying to help me with this.

2 Herberts side by side sound different. There is definitely some difference, but nothing tonally that would make you choose one over the other. Both loud as fuck. If you need a stereo head, get the stereo version, it's that simple. The coolest thing about the VH4S is that you can have a wet/dry rig using a single amp.

It's the Queen Bean of the Diezels. And for those of you who might remember I was going to try out a Herbert - I managed a few quality hours in a studio environment in Vancouver and, well, my GAS for one compared to the V is no longer. Great amp, yep, does it all pretty good except the brootlz which it simply slays in, but my V to me, sounds years beyond better.
As for its powering source, I know with the 6550's it's pounding around 60W to 70W per side out, which is damn close to 100W per side. I use a 4x12 G12K100 loaded stereo cab as a single, and that plus a Mills 4x12 as a double stereo rig. Pounds - and flattens the competition - period.

Which particular one? I've owned two VH4S's, a 2006 and a 2001, and they sounded completely different from each other.RG955TT":2o4n86ob said:

It wasn't the power tubes because I tried a bunch of different power tubes in the 2001 and the changes were
pretty subtle. I also tried different preamp tubes, again changes were subtle, compared to the difference with
the other VH4S. The 2006 sounded sweeter to me.

Other than that, an '09 Stereo versus an '09 Mono will sound pretty similar as would an '04 and '04. All things being equal - that meaning power valves and pre's.
