Hey I was watching a few videos on youtube and seeing people do covers a various bands. A lot of people get the tones really freaking close so I thought asking you guys about tone matching. Do you guys try to match tones of certain songs? If you do how do you go about it? I've seen people do covers with pedals that sounded identical to expensive rigs of the bands they are covering. Anything I play sounds like me playing whatever song it is. I tend to dial in the same tone no matter which amp I use so Im thinking about experimenting.

Too in my case. I've been wondering about this little conundrum for years. Kinda like SH's arduous attempt at solving the unification theory.

I honestly like having my own sound but it would be nice to not sound like me sometimes. Some people can just switch have a drastic tone change to where they sound relatively close to what ever band they are playing or like Pete Cotrell he will play 1 riff in 10 different styles then use the same amp but sound very different each time.

It's not that difficult if you have the right gear and technique playing.

It's one of my hobbies in my free time.

I use a variety of ways, but first thing I do is study, study, study. Internet to the rescue.
What gear did they use? Then try to emulate things with physical gear and/or DAW plugins.

As always, studio "magic" is a huge piece of the puzzle.

Here's some of my work; not all are "100 %", and some have patchwork backing tracks (some have real):

I've never tried to get close to any song tones. I just get a tone that I like and play the songs that I like. No need to over complicate it at all

This. Why would I want to sound like someone else? I make every song my own..... even in cover bands. Anything else is boring.
