I have been doing alot of research on here, google and on other forums. I am looking to start testing different overdrive or boost pedals.

I know there are thousands to choose from, and i know every person will get different results depending on the gear they are using.

Right now I have a VHT pitbull and Im hoping someone can recommend a really good od pedal. I say od is prefferred over a boost because I am using a TS 808 and it sounds killer. I know there is better out there. Although I have never tried just a clean boost I think an od would be a better choice.

So here is a short list of what I have already found and thought would be nice. Please add any that are not on here, and if you have tested any of these please list results.

JETTER GEAR HELIUM BOOST
Bennett insane gain
Fulltone OCD
Catalinbread WIIO
Green Rhino
Superlead
Germanium 4
RAILhead TUA Distortion
green rhino
the SD-1
Signa Drive by CMATMODS
Gearmanndude's Luther Drive
Hardwire CM-2's
Greenhouse Effects Nobrainer distortion
way huge
Rivera Metal Shaman
GODBOX
RC booster
Emma OMP-1 OnoMATOpoeia
GHeffects golddrive or Roadkiller
superior clean boost
Suhr Koko boost
Boss OD-1
Visual Sound Jekyll and Hyde

P.S. I can not afford a Klon or a Tim

I love my Luther drive. It's is a tubescreamer based pedal. I don't use it as a boost. It's literally rock n roll in a box.

Probably out of your price range (seeing that a Tim/Timmy is out) but the king of tone is also another great od!

Thanks, and to be more specific. I could go maybe up to $250 on a pedal.

Its true, there are way too many OD/Boost pedals and unfortunately, you have to try and assload of them to see which one suits you and plays nice with your amp.

Ive been lucky enough to find what works for me without to much of a hassle...

Good luck

I find every amp I through the boss SD-1 in-front of sound great and it's not that expensive.

Yes, I am definitely going to check that one out. I have read nothing but great things. Doesnt have to be expensive to do the trick i suppose.

the Way huge Pork Loin and the Voodoo Lab Sparkle Drive have a clean inject that can really add some nice definition to your boost as well. Just a thought.

my other boost is a HAO Rust Booster. I use it on my Mesa on a Mid-drive setting to thicken my tone without crushing it. Drive at 3:00 and level at 12:00

SD1 tends to get noisy with its buffered input. Just my opinion.

I really like my Maxon OD 808. I'm selling my Ibanez TS9, which was really nice but I liked that the Maxon adds a bit of mids into the mix.

So you have a reg boost and then put one of these after it?

no, they are a different thing. I dont like to stack OD's and boosts into the dirty channel of my amp. With only 20 watts I dont have enough headroom to take advantage of that.

these pedals add a clean in "parallel" to the dirty signal. So your guitar's tone can come through. Its kinda cool.

does it need to have drive or just boost with maybe a slight clip?

Barber super sport is nice, works good as a boost and has trim pots inside to fine tune to your liking.
I also like my maxon od808 as a boost.

Doesnt really matter honestly. The only one I have tried so far is my 808.

I like it because it adds a little gain, but more so really tightens it up.

The TS808 and OD808 have buffered inputs as well... I've never heard of anything wrong with the SD-1 bypass circuit save for a small bleed problem from the effected circuit to the bypass tone when bypassed, but one component added fixes that. I've done that with all of my SD-1 units and never had a problem. Save for the bleed issue, the SD-1's buffered bypass is actually much more efficient than the 808's buffer system. The SD-1 is also a very moddable platform, and one can easily tweak it to their liking moreso than something like an 808 style pedal which is pretty well stuck to what it's doing best short of a total overhaul. For my personal recommendation, I would try something like the Maxon OD820. It's exactly the direction you seemed to be leaning in your original post. 808 based in its tonal color, but dynamically and musically improved. It's the logical "next step" in my opinion.

Actually the Maxon OD820 does the same thing, adding the distorted tone in parallel with the clean tone. It's a neat trick indeed!

Snag a used Rockbox Boiling Point or Kingsley Jester v2. then with what you saved you can grab yourself a nice smoking jacket.
