Let’s talk tone , Adam Jones rig isn’t a. Secret but what are y’all using for those classic tool tones . Still some of my favorite guitar rig tones !
 
A blend of VH4, Marshall 1959 and Uberschall gets pretty close. Complicated, but lots of fun!
 
Boosted JCM800 will get you any of the tones from Opiate, Undertow, some of Aenema, and Salival. For more of the modern sounds from Lateralus, 10K Days, and Fear Inoculum... well, you can really make it work with a lot of amps. The key is to just push the mids super high, go easy on the bass, treble, and presence, and use some mid-heavy speakers like G12M-25 Greenbacks or G12H-75 Creambacks.

My all-time favorite tones from Tool are from the live JC Dobbs show on YouTube. And there he's just using the Superlead. Probably boosted with a simple Boss SD-1. Easy.

These days, I just run my Jose mod 800. Mid-heavy guitar with SD Nazgul straight in. Bogner cab with Creambacks.

Used to have all the other amps, including VH4 and Norlin Silverbursts and all that shit. But it's hard to beat a boosted 800.

I play his stuff with whatever my rig happens to be. HIs music sounds cool, but it really fun to play. when you play one of his intros, then swell the volume knob, and hear the gain coming, it is a level of anticipation coming both for the listener and the player.

Spot on above.
The Marshall is the lead actor it's all built around, with the other amps in supporting roles. I'm using a 76 Superlead with 2xVH4's and it's crushing. I can also sub in a Dual Recto or a Hagen in those roles and get almost the same end result. For me, once I played and heard it in person in my room I better understood what is doing what exactly and what the end result is. The volume needs to be up a bit to let the amps breathe and allow some headroom rather than trying too low and them sounding too compressed.
On their own the amps with the settings we've all seen on the net sound ok alone, but its not the whole picture. It also makes it easier to get that tone out of other amps knowing the end game tone with my gear like a MCII or a 78 JMP50. Les Paul with Duncan Distortion for me.

i find his tone very average, its crazy to me seeing the rigs guys put together going for what to me sounds like your basic LP into a boosted marshall.

Same here. His tone is cool, but at times I find it mushy and blurry… which fits his style and the music perfectly.

A Les Paul into a boosted Marshall is exactly what it sounds like because that's pretty much what it is ;) And it sounds fantastic to me.

Just good playing and good song writing and good musicians (drums, bass, singing too). They know how to work with each other to give each other space and atmosphere within the music. I think 90% of Tool songs can be pulled off just fine with a boosted 800 (as well as a lot of other bands). ;)

The bass tones are definitely amazing, and I agree... even more so than Adam's guitar tone.

yeah thats pretty much it, they are a cohesive unit. i gotta look more into his bass rigs

I’ll be running either my 100 watt Einstein or a vh4 blended with a wiz mtl clone so I’m gonna guess it will sound cool, but this is my 1st attempt at a stereo rig !

You know. I used to think about running a stereo rig also. And I bet it is badass. But lately, I have been running a close mic and an in the room mic. As boring as that sounds, it kind of gives a massive fucking sound.
 
I own a modded 800 and a VH4.

The Marshall is the majority of his type of sound rather than the VH4 in my opinion.
Trick is these things need to be cranked up to deliver the goods.

I also don't think it's that unique really - a LP into a cranked Marshall has been the base tone for many guitarists over the years.
It does sound awesome.
 
I’m not a complete tool fan although I really appreciate what they do, there’s never really any pattern to their songs or at least a lot of their songs… And the changing time signatures are absolutely insane.
I have no idea how they can get through a whole live show and remember everything…
And, I will say, whoever engineers and mixes their albums is a freaking genius!?
