Had this discussion today with someone about how production quality of a album is very important and can make a good album great or a great album mediocre.

Two recent examples of this are Tool's 10,000 days and Metallica's Death Magnetic.

Do you like the production on both or do you think one is great and another sucks?

Its pretty clear to me which is which but some people are having a hard time seeing it or hearing it that I talked to today.

I want to see what Rig-Talks opinion is of the production on both of these albums.

:gethim:

Death Magnetic's production sucks. It clips like crazy.

It doesn't get much better than Tool's production. I think there's more than one way to be "Tone" deaf.

Even without the clipping, DM would still sound like garbage because the instruments sound like crap. Musically I like the album. Its as close as its going to get compared to the glory days.

The Tool album is more boring than watching paint dry but as far as production goes, it sounds a LOT better than Death Magnetic. I really don't dig the guitar tones at all on death Magnetic let along the rest of it.

Funny how they have every amp in the word at their disposal and back on Kill Em All when they basically borrowed stuff they sounded a million times better.

TOOL
The production on the Lateralus album is amazing... That would be a great example
But AENIMA is near and dear to my heart.

I really like DM musically but their last two albums have just had terrible production value. To me Tool is one of the best with production value and 10k days is right up there.

Wow.....to me, that's like comparing a BMW to a KIA   DM had some good songs, but I haven't listened to it in months because the compression/clipping is so insane I get pissed and put on something else.

I have a VH4, and I know the guitar sounds they get on that record really don't do that amp justice- 10 000 Days does, though it's mixed with whatever else.

However it was that Garage Inc was recorded, I hope Metallica goes back to that approach at some point....if they still exist.

I thought 10,000 days was Tools weakest offering song wise but you'll always get great production from these guys.

Death Magnetic on the other hand sounds like poo. I'll take Load and Reload over the last two albums any day.

Slap in the face of Tool to be even compared to mctalli$$$ca, Tool are far better musicians and more about their craft than those other assclowns.

BUt please support mctalli$$$$ca as Lars need your money to buy more $14,000,000 paintings hence him shoveling shit down your throats.

Fuck me.....................

For the record I think the Metallica Death Magnetic album production sucked.

It could have made for a great album with better production.

And without the solos sounding like they were played by a 12 year old noodling away in Guitar Center on a Saturday afternoon.

Or an old man wearing slippers playing drums looking at the Christies auction catalog...................................

I've heard there is a Guitar Hero version of the full DM songs that sounds 100% better than the album did...

And the production on Lateralus gives me wood. Tool really knows how to bring out dynamics in their mixes.

Death Magnetic hands down...

NOT!!!!!!!!!  Tool ftw over almost anything when it goes to tones, sound quality and mix. You need to define production a bit further for the real discussion though, as it includes arrangements and other little things. In this comparison Tool still wins, but another example of a great sounding and produced album is Michael Jackson`s Dangerous.

Tools hands down.

i havn't heard anything from tool that didn't sound good.

i might not dig alot of their material but they sound fucking good...

I still think, looking at justice in terms of guitar and drum tone.
it is their best sounding record.(thats just just guitar and drums..
black takes teh cake for the full band production)

on a side note: OTHER great production discs.

The last two green day records...
Billy talent I, II, or III.
Disturbed whatever their last disc was.
Rise against their last one.

Old crows yong cardinals - Alexis on fire. you can actually understand the screaming dude now.. its awesome!

just off the top of my head.

10,000 Days has better production and is a better record.

I think it's worth mentioning they are both totally different production styles and get the impression their end goal was very different. I don't think Metallica was trying to achieve a big spacious vibe where all the instruments have their own room to breathe. Nor was Tool trying to have a loud, dry in your face production. I think the Black album and 10,000 would be more comparable in that regard. That said, I think 10,000 is an amazing production and is good example of what they wanted to achieve. I dig the music on Death Magnetic, but as a whole I've heard much better examples of dry, in your face records and I'm overall disappointed with the sound quality of the album. Just my $.02
