Tool's 10,000 Days vs. Metallica Death Magnetic production..

Funny how they have every amp in the word at their disposal and back on Kill Em All when they basically borrowed stuff they sounded a million times better.

yup. imo, KEM sounds the best, as far as amps and drums. so warm, and yet so raw.

Tool has fantastic production but although there are some gems on 10,000 days...most of the material is boring compared to DM.

DM with better guitar tones and production would've been great instead of OK.

Had this discussion today with someone about how production quality of a album is very important and can make a good album great or a great album mediocre.


Two recent examples of this are Tool's 10,000 days and Metallica's Death Magnetic.


Do you like the production on both or do you think one is great and another sucks?


Its pretty clear to me which is which but some people are having a hard time seeing it or hearing it that I talked to today.


I want to see what Rig-Talks opinion is of the production on both of these albums.

I haven't heard DM, but the production of 10,000 Days is at the top of the charts. Crank "The Pot" through and audiophile level sound system and be prepared to poop your pants.

Rick Rubin was/is really good at promoting stuff and he has always had a killer business sense and killer drive. With that said, Ive always thought that he had a tin ear.zero musical talent and although he has the record producer label credit on his belt, Ive never heard him produce anything that sounded outstanding. Not trying to shit on his shoes but his name would never come up on my list of amazing producers. hell His name woudln't come up on my list ot 1,000,000 producers in general lol

ALL IMHO.

Basically what Im saying is the production on the tool album blows the doors off the new Metallica album. I hate to say it but comparing the two is...... Well you get the idea lol

I've only heard DM on the radio, so that limits my exposure. From what I've heard, there are a few little "nuggets of gold" in several of the songs. The transitions, mixes and production frustrate me enough that I typically change the channel after about 2 minutes. The guitars just sound "off" too me.

I thought Lateralus was a nearly perfect album for Tool. 10K is pretty good, but they lose me a little in their songwriting. I will say that I love the sound they captured on the album.

Imagine DM songs performed and recorded 20 + years ago during the Puppets or Justice sessions. Would've been incredible to hear those songs with proper production, James's good voice, better drumming, better tones, etc. I think 75 % of DM material is strong buts it hard to get past the production and the seriously poor drumming (ok he was never great but much, MUCH better in the 80s).

I don't know why Metallica doesn't use Load and Reload as what the production should sound like. They sounded great IMO, very full and deep! The last two albums sucked production-wise big time.

For the record I think the Metallica Death Magnetic album production sucked.

It could have made for a great album with better production.

And without the solos sounding like they were played by a 12 year old noodling away in Guitar Center on a Saturday afternoon.

I like DM as far as music goes, some cool stuff...not by any means their greatest obviously, but I don't listen to it cause the production makes it sound like shit. I just can't handle the clipping.

Production on 10,000 Days is 10,000 times better. Yet its not my overall favorite album by them musically, so I usually only listen to a handful of songs unless I'm in a "zone out" mood.

I haven't heard it, but it must be really bad if it bothers you. I mean how bad is it really? I've heard some unknown bands with cool music & bad production that nobody would like to spin in his car, but I doubt that a CD of a well known band would be that bad. I mean I haven't heard it, so if you say it is, then I'll have to trust you.
