Top Wrap on a Lester

I never topwrap.

Les Pauls are "slinky" to me tension-wise, even with the big strings I use. (Generally 10-52 or 11-56 in standard tuning)

It definitely benefits some lps to do so, but I search out lps that don't require it - both tonally, and tension.

*shrug*

I assume when you top wrap you have to tweak your setup? Do the strings feel looser when you top wrap, never tried it.

I don't see top wrapping on semi hollow gibsons much, so curious why its more common on Les Pauls.
They do feel looser. You don't have that sharp break angle that adds tension, and a stiffer feel. Atleast that's been my experience.

Players like Bonamassa do it for that looser playability factor, and some swear it effects the tone with more sustain and resonance. YMMV.

Top wrapping changes the break angle on the string. It makes the guitar a little easier to bend on when using heavier gauged strings. I started doing it when we went to Eb and Drop Db, and I went from 10-46 to 11-49 guage stings. It makes the 11s feel more like my 10s in standard tuning. There is also a theory that the guitar should resonate better with the tail piece all the way down to the body.

Forgot to mention, when I had my 335 top wrapped I found it way too easy to knock the high E out of the saddle slot

For most string sets, if you don't use ball ends from old strings to act as spacers, the end wrapping will come around the back of the tail piece and rub the hell out of your hand.
I top wrap some of my Gibsons for years, never encountered this.

And I don't use Elixir strings.
