Friend of mine owns a Triaxis and I've never played one. Would it dial anything like a Recto? How about tone wise? Can't trust internet clips for much.

Depends on the Triaxis version. The early-mid 90's versions had a decent Vintage Recto channel. This is refferd to as Ver 2, non phat. V1 did not have recto, V2 phat changed the recto channel and made it "phat", meaning unusable. Almost everybody who gets this version mods it back to "non phat". I'm not sure about the newer ones, from what I recall they dropped the recto channel again.

I had a V2 non phat, and compared it to a Recto preamp and also to a Single rectifier head. You should not buy the Triaxis for the Recto, it really isn't is strongest point. You can't have the Modern, only the Vintage, and it isn't quite as good as the original. You could use it only if you needed some variation, or a recto "type" tone once in a while.

I had both, its not the same, but its good. If it matters, the clean was better on the triaxis. I had an early version of the triaxis (V2) run into a Marshall monoblock pwr amp. way more versatile than the Rec, but it did not sound the same in Rec (modern) mode. I liked the Marshall output section better than the Mesa's with the EL34's, and a SS rectifier. The tones are good, but if you are looking to nail a Rec tone, it is a little lacking when compared heads up ;) Not quite the snarl of a real Dual Rec, slightly less detail up top

Thanks guys. So the triaxis doesn't come in a head form, only a rack unit?

Yeah, it is more of a Mark series preamp.

Look at the Rectifier Recording preamp for Recto sounds in a rack preamp.

I'd like to hear a Triaxis through the stilettos and even electradyne power amps.

Similclass has the switchable "Half - Modern - Deep" - settings for the poweramp section that really compliments the Triaxis and in my opinion is where the magic happens. I tried it with other power amps, but the combo was really amazing.
