I know that higher-gain amps do not benefit as much from NOS glass but here is what I've found out:

Stock JJ: Not bad, a bit flat and boring, not realy exciting.

RCA: This tube carries some "Fender" sound! The high mids were a bit too glassy for my tastes, and felt like trying to un-Friedman a Friedman haha...

Tesla (Roznov): Close to the JJ but slightly more articulate and more hmmm... "together" sounding. Strong midrange, I think that this is a nice tube for a high gain amp.

Mullard (short plate): Well this was my favorite. Great compression, great natural higher midrange, nice attack... The most "vintage Marshall"sounding of the batch. I left it in there :)

The differences are not big but it's there, especially of you try the amp at concert levels. Generally I'd be happy using anything, for my tastes Mullard won but the Smallbox is a fantastic amp that will sing no matter what.

I have an NOS RFT 12ax7 in the V1 spot of my Smallbox and it really works nicely.
