I'd rather it be based on ideological loyalty than skin color myself. A lot of Rhodies fighting in the armed forces were native Africans. But I agree, like Vietnam you have a situation where it can be difficult, or impossible to determine where loyalties lie since a lot of people are caught in the crossfire and are just hedging their bets on one side or another hoping to avoid getting caught in the crosshairs of who they think would win. Maybe that lends to your argument but it's too bad it has to be so screwed up.

It was still called the Boer war in the early 20th century.

It was called Boer because a ship was sunk off Sth Africa and everyone got fresh water because they sunk a boer. Boer meaning hole/well in Dutch translated to bore. So when someone says you are an insufferable bore it means you are boring and a South African of Dutch descent :-)

As for the comment somewhere further up on who I'd support in South Africa - it wouldn't be the absolute failure of a Government they have over there now post apartheid. Basically since the ANC got into power they have reverted to type and turned South Africa into a basket case just like Zimbabwe and Kenya etc.
 
Sixty years ago my family abandoned their home and lives in Rhodesia because it was going to shit. I heard it was a beautiful place. Many of our family heirlooms come from those days, a lot of precious ivory.
