Here's some comparison clips of the same amp/settings/setup/chain blah blah with the only difference being a tube swap from EL34 to KT77. I have my own opinion on it, but I'm curious what the ears around here feel about the differences.

Since I was feeling lazy yesterday morning when I recorded these, it's lame slow stuff. :D

Marshall branded EL34:

JJ KT77:

And since I'm a dickhead, side by side:

This was in the 20 watt DSL running through a Mesa widebody 1x12 ported cab. What do we think, guys?

What I like about the KT77 clip is that it reminds me of 6L6s which is my preferred power tube. The bass from the KT77s seems to be overtaking the bass line though, at least that's what I'm hearing on my PC. As usual I will listen to the clips on another system, report back if I hear any different, blah blah blah.

The EL34 has the classic grind that I would expect and it gives a lot of room for the bass line to do it's thing.

The side by side clip kicks all kinds of arse, really digging that one. Nice job NFA!

Personally, I'd rock you hard with my EL34s. Choose any Sabbath, Maiden, Priest or Halen from that "rock era" and we're on brutha.

Impressive.

I would love to hear the raw tracks. Sounds great though nonetheless. Big KT77 guy here for modern stuff anyway

Personal preference. I'd take a JJ KT77 over any Ruby EL34 any day of the week.

Me too. Now SED =C= EL34's vs JJ KT77's now that is a close race!

Really?

I own every EL34 offering from JJ including the KT77 and in my amps and opinion, the JJ's fall very short. I wish I could find something I like as much as the Winged C's... my Winged C stock is finite.

I have one quad of winged C's that have never been used. And a quad in one of my amps.

Not a close race, but more comparable for a tone i like. I will never fork out for the cash for =C= at the price they currently fetch. Tbh.

Exactly. KT77 are a nice tube, although I like EL34s best. But no EL34 sounds as good as Winged Cs do in my 2204. That includes Siemens and vintage Mullard, which also sound amazing.

It's funny, in the mix if you turn off the bass while playing the 77 guitars, you can definitely hear it drop out, but it's hard to get a sense of it when it's there. The 77s just seem to have too much going on in the low end to let the bass shine through on its own. How very 80s metal.

I do like the SED's in Marshall circuits. Great tubes.

There likely won't be another SED. I cherish mine. But JJ's get the job done for me ATM.

for me different tubes have different places. I will swap in winged C's if I were to do some serious recording and go back to JJ's for just screwing around the shop or for a gig. For me I don't need SED's just playing around.

I would take SED's over any JJ any day, but it is not feasible for me to justify the cost for the use,as I once heard an old man say "you don't need mood lights to masterbate."

But I do like the JJ KT77 for what it is and the price.

I like the fatness of the KT77 on it's own, but listening back to your original mixes again I still put the KT77 mix in third place.

Cool bass iso track as well, reminded me of DD Verni there for a bit.
