Gonna get a new head but can't decide which. I play prog, classic rock, and alternative stuff. Probably will get one of the Tubemeisters (18 or 36) or a mini rectifier. Opinions?

i'd go for the mini rectifier also

depends on what kind of tone you prefer, for me the pushed channel 1 + the vintage/modern channel 2 sound absolutely great, add some pedals to the mix and you're good to go

i've only had a chance to try them in a store, the mini rectifier has impressed both times, the tubemeister not so much when i got to try out the 36, but definitely try both if you can

the tubemeister to me has more of a hi-fi kind of sound to it, but you can dial in some nice tones it i'd have liked to try it through a bigger cab, through the matching cab it wasn't really doing it for me, and i can't stand the blue neon plexi personally but that's just aesthetics, tonally i found more tones which i liked on the mini rectifier, warmer/chunkier sounding to me and fast to dial in as well

I have played the Mini recto and the tubemeister 18. If I am remembering correctly the mini recto was hooked up to a mesa 4x12, and the tubemeister was hooked up to a mesa 1x12 cabinet (the one meant for the mini recto).

The mini recto I thought was a real nice amp. It was very easy for me to EQ and I thought it sounded very good and had some nice volume and gain on tap.

The tubemeister for whatever reason was not to my liking. No matter how I adjusted the controls I just was not able to get a sound out of it that I liked. I am not sure though if the amp was just not for me, or if the mesa 1x12 cabinet was possibly negatively affecting the tones. It might have sounded much better with a tubemeister cabinet.

One of the main issues for me is the Mesa is US made. Both amps have their fans, each can be made to sound good, but I'm tired of sending money to china.

I have not played the Tubemiester, but I own the Min-Rec - its the only Amp I have ever purchased new. It as an great amp in my opinion. American made - wide variety of tones - cool as hell! My only regret is I did not wait until some were selling used. I think it is worthe $1K new as it is really a versitle great sounding amp - at least for at home where I play -But I would have preferred to pick one up used for a few hundred less - or so. I saw someone has one for sale in classifieds for $775 - the lower price makes a great amp an awesome amp.

I'd go Mesa

Two completely different sounds IMHO. The Tubemeister has more of a rhaspy distortion, almost like a Plexi, while the Mesa has a coarser grained "hair" to its distortion.

I've played them both back to back, and would definitely go with the Rec. It sounds more open, warm to me. The lack of presence control on the H&K kinda irritated me too. And yes, the whole MIC vs. MIA factor does resonate with me. Sure, it's nearly impossible to avoid "Made in China" completely, but I do when ever possible.

EDIT

I should clarify that I played the 18, not the 36. The shared EQ was annoying too.
