I'm thinking about putting some fresh tubes in the good ol' Recto. I bought it about two and a half years ago with the tubes that are in it now. The previous owner said they were fairly new, so they're probably three years old.
At least once a week I crank the amp realy loud for about three hours during bandpractice, and play it every day at low volumes at home.
The amp still sounds absolutely awesome and it doesn't sound like the tubes need a change, but they're used pretty well, and I'm just curious what different tubes will sound like in the amp :D

What are some good recommendations? Right now there are standard Mesa STR440's in the powersection, and also Mesa pre amp tubes. I have no complaints, but looking for more options, maybe a little more high gain specific.

Thanks!

I use older Mesa 430's in my Triple F and JJ preamp tubes. I find the 430's to be slightly brighter with more depth to the sound. I also like the TAD 6L6's... which have a bit more bottom end. 440's are also okay.

Also, do you use the rectifier tubes? If not, yank them out and save some heat and the power transformer from having to supply voltage to them. Just my .02.

Thanks, I'll look into those tubes!

I don't use the rectifier tubes indeed, so can I just pull them out? Sounds logical, but won't it hurt the amp?

Boogie doesn't sell the 430's anymore, but they are Sovtek 6L6wxt's. Just need to make sure they will work with Mesa amps.

You will be fine pulling the recto tubes. It actually takes stress off of the power transformer since it doesn't need to power them. Of course the amp won't work if you switch to them. Haha.

Cool, I'll be pulling them out them, good to know! :)

Any more suggestions?
