Neither. Maxon OD808.

What application are you looking to use it for? Mid gain, boost higher gain?

Using to boost an already dirty amp into overdrive... 80% amp gain 20% pedal if that makes sense

What amp? Some amps don't need the extra mid bump from TS type ODs when boosting.

I've had the original TS-808, the TS-9, and a couple of reissues. They all seem to boost the mids, cut the bass, and alter the treble. I wound up selling all of mine and just going with a clean boost. And this reminds me to dig into the 19 gallon bucket of old pedals I have I don't use anymore and sell some.

I've tried them all and the above sentence should be the end of the thread.

You'll find a lot of opinions on what is best for boosting. Maxon OD808 is tried and true. I have had probably ten of them. I have had many other TS types including originals. I also had a VL Effects Greentone which is a $400 pedal. It nails that creamy mids thing perfectly.
The one that seems to work best for boosting is the Cussack Screamer. It's very quiet as well. Has a really nice silent foot switch. I've had three of them.
The Maxon 808 works also but I prefer the Screamer. I've been using one for several years now. Right after he released his V2 version. The TS808 is great for lower to mid gain. You get the creamy mid that pedal is famous for. More vibe and feel but it's not better imo for boosting a gained up amp. TS808 is better for a cleaner set amp where your looking for more gain from the pedal. It will tighten for boosting but not as good as the Screamer or Maxon.

For goosing a dirty amp I use the Cusack Screamer too. Three different types of clipping via a switch. It's not my favorite for the SRV application, where the amp is relatively clean and you're using it to get a little dirt and shift the tone.

But ime these are all very amp/player dependant. Sometimes I like a Klon-type, sometimes a Koko boost but I'm often using those to goose another pedal like a BE-OD (with gain set low, like 9:00).

OD808/TS808 types are usually the smoothest, most natural sounding. They are darker and less noticeable when you use them.

SD-1/CBAOD/GTOD types are brighter, crunchier, and the most aggressive. They can make amps have a more aggressive and percussive upper midrange.

TS-9 types are in between the other two. Not as dark and smooth as 808 types, but not as bright and aggressive as SD-1 types. They can add some upper mid aggression, but also sound more natural than some.

Thanks for all the replies... I've always used a Boss SD 1 with my 2203X and wanted to try out a tube screamer (never tried one before) and had some options to consider. I basically like a classic rock tone with a little more gain (slash). I want raunch and clank, I don't want smooth, so I prefer brighter tones with harmonics

None of the above. Maxon OD9. :D

Try an MXR Zakk Wylde OD. No shit... It's the only pedal I've had for 10+ years, (next to my 10-Band EQ). It simply kills in front of Marshalls.

^^That is a good pedal.. like an sd1 with more bottom end

I have both. The Wylde OD is based on the SD-1, since that's what Zakk used, but doesn't suck the bass, and much more aggressive in character. It has a really "pissed off" character.

It's just as you describe, raunch, clank, and rich in harmonics. Where in Florida are you??

I like the gtod from mxr. You can switch between the wylde od or the gt. There is an internal switch to go back and forth. My personal go to is the maxon od808 and the keeley red dirt.
