Turned a speaker out into an adjustable line out

Last night I modded my Egnater Seminar head by changing one of the speaker outs into an adjustable line out. So simple - just get 5 parts (2.2K ohm, 470 ohm, 100 ohm 1 watt resistors, a 5K linear mini pot and a Marshall mini knob), drill a hole for the pot by the output jack and install it, a couple snips of wires on the output jack, add one ground wire, put the resistors in the right places and snip the leads, a couple solder joints and done. Had to use a Marshall mini knob - the chicken head would not fit in that position. Checked it out and it works like a charm! It seems to work really well regardless of master volume level with a minor pot adjustment. I think I might change my PeaceMaker lineout since I sometimes can't get enough signal to my efx unit with the PPIMV at low settings... Clips this weekend... Anyway... first SIMPLE mod done and working! Here's a picture:

Sheesh... why am I so proud of this simple mod???

Do you have a schematic or any pics of it inside the chassis? That would be a help for me :) PM me if you'd prefer!

I'll put together a schematic and post it here. Should only take a few minutes sometime this week... Pictures would not help as much as things are pretty crowded now between the lineout jack and speaker jack w/the pot and resistors in there...

Awesome! I look forward to it

Steve,
I hope you black epoxy gooped the heck out of your new mod so no one can copy it.

So, how much for your candy-striped Kramer now that you have crossed the line from player into amp tweaker? You aren't going to need those guitars anymore. Look at guys like ralle500 on the Metro board. He records a clip of his new mod and knees get week from Los Angeles to Shanghai. Twelve minutes later his amp is apart and he's changing it to another clip that makes everyone insanely jealous. Modding and tweaking amps seems to turn former guitar players into mental patients. We are all half way there to begin with. Once you know what you're doing inside an amp, it's all over.

Now tell the truth, instead of daydreaming about sick Lynch licks and Van Halen riffs and boobs, now you're thinking circuits and about zeners and cathode followers.

PS. Lets here that seminar amp cut loose on. Some of the You Tube clips of them are sick!

because you did it yourself without having to haul it somewhere and wait and pay for someone to do it for you. I was so happy the first time I was able to install my own pickup in a guitar rather than bringing it in, paying $65.00 and waiting for it. Same thing with speaker swaps. I don't think I'll get to the amp work point though, that could be dangerous for me and I'm terrified of getting shocked. Good for you my friend!

P.S. Nice ass!

You always know how to make me feel special. :inlove:

In all seriousness though - you've hit it perfectly right. Not having to have someone else do it and pay alot for it makes doing it yourself very satisfying...

What really cracks me up is Suhr makes a box called a ISO Line-Out Box that essentially does what this simple mod does:

Suhr ISO Line-Out Box

Now, nothing against Suhr, I own their products... and I see there are more options with their box (it runs balanced - not important IMO), but the Suhr box is $180! It is not a load either, simply turns a speaker jack into an adjustable line out. You still have to connect a cab and you now have an extra box to carry around. My mod cost less than $8 in parts and 45 minutes of my time and I don't need another box...

Well done - that was funny man... But I really have no interest in becoming a tweaker although I haven't been playing as much since I started preparing for the Egnater Seminar and trying to get these amp designs down... I'm going to build two more amps I have ideas for and partial designs done for and when they are right - no more tweaking... I really want to continue spending my free time playing and writing...

I have GOT to do a clip of the Seminar head for you guys. It sounds amazing. I also want you guys to hear the '57 Nash relic strat I bought. The thing sounds beautiful on the neck pickup and just kicks all kinds of ass - I play very differently on it and really dig it.

MMMmmmmm.... cathode followers... :inlove:

yeah, but you could use a chicken head knob on his box, not on your mod.

Hmmmm.... good point...

donbarzin has over 1500 posts on Rig Talk so far. Over 1400 of them have been hilarious

On a single head it makes sense. That said, before I'd pay 180 bucks for a line-out box I'd go this route...

Steve, I am sure you could make yours into a external box….

Sure, it would be easy.

BTW - Bruce Egnater drew this mod up for us at the class I attended, just to be clear... When I said "my mod", I should have said "Bruce's mod in MY amp"... All I did was read the schematic and install it... Not that these kinds of mods aren't common knowledge all over the web, just wanted to be clear on the origin...
