Anyone done this?

I want a single coil in neck instead of hum these days and I was gonna have it changed out (even though it would look terrible), but I was told I should turn off one coil instead.

I'm wondering if anyone has done that and liked the result?

I have a Duncan Jazz neck pick up.

Easy re wire. Many ways to do it depending on your configuration.
Why not get a Phat Cat P90 single coil??? It's humbucker sized, but gives you a fat single coil sound

Very common, and there are several options.
You can simply re wire the pickup eliminating one coil.
Install a push pull pot (either volume or tone) to "split" the pickup.
Rewire the pickup in Parallel mode, it will sound and feel like a single coil without 60 cycle hum.
Install a push pull pot or switch to switch the pickup from series to parallel.
Depending on the pickup selector you have now you may be able to utilize it for several of the wiring options above.

cool, yeah. Going to try it. I have a coil tap feature, but don't like it as much as a true single coil.

I'll check into P90 single.

Thanks!

Also, try a Dimarzio Bluesbucker; sort of sounds like a humcancelling P-90, and taps to a true single coil. Fralin Unbucker sounds like a vintage humbucker, taps to a true single, and the Seymour Duncan The Mag, which is discontinued, is more high output, but taps to a true single; they pop up on eBay or various forum sale threads.

If you already have the coil tap on your guitar it's the same as turning off one coil.
