Right, this is a poll i ran last year on HC. for the most part it went down well, but few metal fanboys decided to be assholes about it. saying that it was great fun deconstructing their stupid arguments and failure to read the original post and in general a good time was had by all.

The Poll then, was which company makes the ultimate metal guitar, i listed what i saw was the big four, Ibanez, jackson, ESP and BC rich. The parameters were which company makes the best large scale production line metal guitars in general. no custom shop, no small boutique builders or anything like that. by metal we mean streamlined, FR toting guitar metal with guys like Metallica as a starting point, so modern metal to present. basically when the "metal" style guitar emerged as a specific targetable demographic in marketing.

no arguing on the definition of what a metal guitar is, it's my poll ;)

I'm going to add in Dean and Charvel to the poll as Dean do seem to have quite a few metal endorsee's these days and charvel have really re-emerged as a force in guitar making.

making the poll a week long effort as things move a wee bit slower over here, but thats fine

so..

Go!

Oh yeah feel free to justify your answers too. i went for ESP. I've owned one, wouldn't necessarily buy another, if i was going to go the metal route it would be one of those music zoo natural series koa san dimas charvel jobs, but for me every major band i listened to played ESP, or had an endorsement with them. jackson would be a close second, but i think ESP's in terms of mass production, are better made, more agressive sounding and looking and just scream "METAL" loudly in your face. they dare you to have the bollocks to pick them up in a shop, but you better not be a pussy, because they'll kill you with pointy metal death rays

Wow, tough call. Ibanez, Jackson and ESP are definitely the big three. I own several Ibanez and ESP's and I love them both. Great metal guitars.

This!

I have owned SEVERAL of each. Only have a Jackson these days. And it does metal VERY WELL! ;)

yeah i think of the big 3 Ibanez is the underdog, as the other 2 were always metal whereas Ibanez came from a virtuoso endorsee kinda place. I owned an Ibanez JS1000 about 10 years ago, killer guitar, just incredible sounding, even with the Feds and PAF Pros it was metal thru and thru

My opinion,I'd say ESP,because they make production 7 string baritones. And to
me they have the heaviest sound,Which Jackson doesn't make, and BC Rich.plus
a BC Rich USA model is way to much money,a production ESP is around $1300
to $1500,even an ESP MI is only $1200,then a Viper is a little more.
USA Jacksons are $2000 new, bang for buck I say ESP.
My only problem with ESP are the thin necks.I have a Horizon Custom Shop and
the neck is perfect, thickness and overall feel.but it was $4200,that's a bit much
but I dig it.
Can't say much about Ibanez because I've only owned one and that was a few years
ago,I will say I don't like the fact you can't get an ebony fretboard without ordering
one,and Im not a fan of trems.
Charvels are new to me,I bought one a few months back and love it.But can't stand
the Floyd Rose though.
I dig Jacksons,I have an RR-1 and a Soloist,older models,but I wouldn't buy anymore
new. They have made shark fin inlays and floyds pretty dam crusty.stuck in the 80s.move
on and watch people like Anderson and Suhr,if your gonna charge all that money for a
guitar,re-tool and make a nice guitar, not rehash the same old black Strats.
And I've never played a BC Rich made in Asia,or where ever.

Neck thru Jackson Soloists or Randy Rhodes are hard to beat for a metal guitar. :2thumbsup:

I voted Jackson. Ive had BC'c, Ibanez's, Jacksons and Esps. My old DK1 was an amazing guitar. Not that the other ones werent.

Im a little shock though. I wouldve thought there wouldve been a landslide of Ibanez votes on this forum

My XPLs or a good old Explorer is tough to beat for metal IMO. So no Gibson.... No vote.

I've never seen one of these polls online where Jackson did'nt edge out ESP.

I voted ESP, but really I meant LTD. For real. I don't own an ESP, but I do own / have owned about 4 LTD's, everyone was anus destroyingly awesome.

Metal started on Gibsons and Fenders. No vote for me because the Explorer is the ultimate metal guitar. I don't play metal anymore (per your description) but I have owned an ESP NT-II, a custom shop Charvel, and a handful of Jacksons. Big time win for the Explorer. It just feels right and has a huge wall of sound.

After owning multiple esp, ibanez and jackson guitars i vote for jackson.
im a big esp fan and own a bunch of them but both of my jackson usa sl2h seemed better than the standard series esp that i owned, since we are talking regualr production and not custom shop stuff i like jackson better, the usa sl2h had a better feel to me than the standard series esp. i have many esp custom shop guitars right now and if we was talking about the custom shop stuff i will say i like esp better.

I voted Jackson too. When I think metal, I automatically think Jackson :dunno: They cater to the metal community. On a side note, the white Marty Friedman Kelly causes me to pitch a tent every time I see it

Call me weird... I voted without reading any of the threads below the poll - as I didn't want to be biased. I own 2 ESP's, but since I don't play "strictly metal", I looked at all the guitars in the poll, and decided which do I see most in the world of metal music?? Personally I see Ibanez more than any of the other guitars in this area of music, outside of Gibson, etc. so I voted Ibanez. I'm not saying they make the best guitar for metal, I'm saying they seem to be used the most in metal of all the guitars offered in the poll.

Peace,
V.
