Upgrade my od pedal?

I'm boosting my new 800 with a sd-1 at the moment and am happy with the results so far. Very happy with the band actually. Of course with a new amp, I start thinking great excuse to try a new pedal too! Lol. I'm currently using the boost to push the amp harder for more saturation and sustain, I don't need to tighten the low end or anything like that. Is there a big sonic difference or feel improvement if I used an OCD or some other "higher end" od/ boost to accomplish this? Any suggestions? I've used tube screamer types in the past and am looking for something different. My short list is the OCD, fat boost, xotic rc/ac/ep booster, cae line boost, not looking to spend more then 125 used. Thanks!!

I'd say stay away from the AC booster for that purpose. Great pedal, but my results were not good using at a boost. Take a look at the Barber LTD. I used it to boost my JMP 2204. Keeps the amp tight, but adds a ton of "quiet" gain.

if it sounds great i'd stick with it =) i think is probably the best advice

so many great OD pedals out there, the BB preamp ranks very highly for me,
i've been trying out a MI audio blue boy deluxe (modded/flexible TS style pedal) which works absolutely great.

as a clean boost, heard great things on the CAL mk 4.23

i'm thinking the main difference might be the amount of noise/hiss added, and the EQing of the actual pedal, you might get some cool results with an EQ pedal thrown in there

otherwise go through this guy's channel lots of OD pedals into the dirt and clean channel of a krank which might give you some idea, how each reacts , from those i've seen the main difference is the amount of saturation/noise added

Since getting my OCD and 808 clone I can stand even trying to use my SD-1 anymore. It's so thin and brittle sounding in comparison. I actually like the Boss OD-3 better than the SD-1, but my vote goes to the V4 OCD.
Thick and dynamic sounding for boosting.
Level @9/10, Drive @1/10 and Tone @5/10 in HP mode = awesome

There are very few rigs that sound cooler than an 800 with an SD-1 for a particular type of tone. I prefer stock SD-1's to any of the modded ones too. Not that the modded SD-1's don't sound good, they do, they just don't sound like a typical SD-1 anymore. I would say that if you are really, truly digging your tone with that rig, maybe experiement with a Keeley modded SD-1 and an old made in Japan SD-1 and see if you do like a slightly different flavor of SD-1.

I have an OCD that I love too, but I'm not sure if I have ever even used it with my 800.

There are tons of mods for your SD-1 you can do yourself. Most mods just enhance the pedal, not really chan ge it into something else. This could be a very fun way to experiment if you are currently liking your SD-1. Mod it and like it more

Modding myself seems like it might be fun and I can always get another sd-1 cheap. I don't think I'm trying to replace the boss either, just experiment to see if I can get something I might like better. I think my biggest complaint with the boss right now is it does seem to add a good bit of noise, but even higher end pedals do that too right? Btw I'm running the boss level 3oclock tone noon and gain 8 o'clock.

Any reason you haven't tried it with your Marshall? Just wondering because I think that's the pedal I'm most interested in right now.

Sweet! I'm on my iPhone now but I'll check out those YouTube demos when I get home.

My best OD pedals are the Dano CC Trans OD and Drive V1 versions. Sure, they are blatently stolen designs but I didn't know that when I bought them for some rediculous cheap price brand new. I use my SD1 as a straight clean boost in front of one or the other of them to push things a bit further sometimes. I still like that low end cut the SD1 delivers for certain applications.

I'm really a sucker for my ts-9. I have a v4 OCD and while it sounds great to me as a stand alone distortion, it's not my favorite in terms of a boost. I think this is kind of specific to my ears, but I LOVE the mid hump that the ts9 has, whereas the OCD is kind of "hifi" sounding in a way. While tht may be good for you, it's not my cup of tea.

RC booster works great, Timmy also works well for a boost.

i agree with Chubtone, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

just for gas though, out of the pedals you've listed, i'd pick the EP. the EP kicks ass! it leaves the low end intact or even a slight boost, and then has a nice crunchy midrange.

I'm right there with ya man. I love the mid hump and nastiness of a good old TS9.
