Occam's Razor.
Paraphrased Occam's Razor says the simplest explanation is the correct one.
So you have two possible explanations for the source of the virus:
1. A hibernating bat 800 miles away from Wuhan somehow infected a pangolin which then just happened to be captured by a hunter who then just so happened to bring said pangolin to the Wuhan Wet Market.
2. The fuckin' coronavirus research lab two blocks away had an accident.

To be fair, most who would spout lab leak theories early on also included some assumed malice behind it.
But ya, the cover up while they thought they could fix their mess is the true crime.

With accident vs. intentional Occam's Razor again provides insight:
1. The CCP intentionally released a deadly man-made virus into the surrounding community with hopes it would spread to the US and not infect their own citizens.
2. The lab with a known history of protocol failures and improper training had yet another accident.
While I don't trust the CCP as far as I can throw Winnie the Pooh, I don't believe this was malice but rather an unfortunate accident. Of course the CCP did then engage in a coverup and were aided by the WHO, the NIH and the western media. NIH assisted because they were implicated as the source of funding even though such research was banned in the US.

Remove the malice in the release - and you are left with the malice that lied then and lies to this day while millions died and the world economy is disrupted.
While "all the best people" supported them in their deceit because of domestic politics.
Had China told the truth from the get-go the world could have perhaps stopped the virus in China.
The notion that was an accident does not get China off the hook for a world-historical crime against humanity.
