Using Boss sd-1 to boost Boss ds-1?

Hi, so here's the thing, I have boss ds-1 that I very much like. I use it for hard rock ala george lynch, satch and what not. My question is, if I want heavier sound for stuff like megadeth, black label society, lamb of god etc etc, would it be wise of me to buy sd-1 to boost ds-1? I mean, I've heard of people using sd-1 to boost their already dirty amps, so wouldn't that be kinda similar to boosting "already dirty" ds-1?

A "more gain" DS1 might be the Vox Saturator. I used to hit the DS1 with an MXR Dyna Comp. Kept the DS1 sound and gave endless sustain.

Or maybe just an eq with the SD 1.. try the MXR 10 band or the boss GE 7, should be all you need without too much compression mud.

Boosting as a way to achieve more gain is done in front of a tube amp. An SD-1 in front of a DS-1 (or any solid state amp) will not boost the DS-1 into more gain but will just have a multiplying effect of gain. It is not the same as boosting a tube preamp.

Stacking pedals is a pretty common practice...in fact Wampler recently released an all in one box that's essentially a stack of two of their singular pedals. The SD-1 is relatively inexpensive...I'd say to give it a try and see if it works for you.

Hmm I see, I have another question for you. If I decide use a sd-1 in front of a dirty amp, is it a good idea to add on top of that (last in chain), a clean boost, such as mxr micro amp, for solo boost?, or will these 2 pedals sound bad together? for the same reason you mentioned for sd-1+ds-1.

I've ran an SD-1 into the a DS-1 into the low input of an 800. The SD1 can give you more distortion, it will also tighten up the low end. Lots of tonal options by changing the level, tone and distortion level of each pedal. You can also run either into the front of a dirty amp to get more gain. I generally like the SD-1 for that more. If you put a booster after the SD-1 into a dirty amp, depending on how dirty it is, you will probably just get more distortion. Cheap pedals and lots of fun to be had. Just give it a go and see what your hands and ears like!

I've done it and if the amp is setup slightly dirty it sounds really good.
Short clip, Epi LP > SD-1 > DS-1> Peavey Ultra Plus clean channel cranked > Vet 30

So you can "stack" overdrives/boosts. But still, to your original question, the SD-1 will not "boost" the DS-1, you will just be stacking overdrives which will together boost the tube preamp.

You can definitely add a clean boost anywhere in the chain with as many overdrives/boosts as you like. At some point though its going to get kind of muddy. As someone stated previously, try them all in different sequences/combos and see what you like. There is no right or wrong answer.
