Using effects going to church PA.

I have recently started playing electric guitar at church. I am currently using a boss ME80 multi effect pedal with some success going directly into the pa. Another younger player just acquired a new Les Paul and wants to play it instead of acoustic. He has a small collection of effects pedals. I see no amp simulator of any kind. In the research I have done you need some sort of amp or amp simulator for when all effects are turned off. Is this correct? Don't you need something to shape your clean tone?

First, you might want to post in the main forum. This forum is about a specific amp manufacturer.

Second, it sounds best when always using a simulator, even when playing clean.
