Any suggestions on how to brighten up a freidman b.e. ? Is there a 12ax7 that will brighten up the amp enough to make a noticeable difference or is it basically just voiced dark?

Turn the treble knob up a bit. If that doesn't work, try the presence. If that doesn't work try a Ruby AC5. Or a Tung-Sol in V1 or V2.
Obviously I've tried lowering the bass and raising treble and or presence :D I might try different speakers , maybe vintage 30's ?

I've tried it with blackback 30's from the 70's in an old Marshall 4x12 and with g12t75's in a Marshall 4x12.

Blackback 30s, as in G12H-30? If so, those are pretty damn bright. Probably the brightest speaker Celestion makes. G12T-75 is scooped. V30 has a mid-hump and a good amount of top end. G12M-25 has lots of mids, not as tight as the others though. Top-end is pleasant.

I would probably try the Anniversary G12-H30 if you can find them. Probably your best bet.

seriously? use the knobs that have the words "presence" and "treble" next to them for starters...
not trying to be funny at all....
