So I have a Dr. Z open back cab, slightly larger than the Z Best, which makes me wonder if it's some custom cab they built or what, but it sounds amazing. It has 2 G12H 30 Anniversary speakers in it.

We plugged the 5153 Fiddy into my buddy's brand new Mesa 2x12 with V30s and it sounded pretty badass, but the I could really hear the midrange honk in the V30s; it sounded great in a way, but it was hard to dial out.

My friend and I are thinking to swap speakers so both of our cabs will have a V30/G12H 30 mix. The Dr. Z cab is open back and the Mesa is closed.

Any experiences with this mix?

Supposed to be a really great mix. My Zilla 2x12 has two G12H30s but I've been thinking of swapping one out for a V30. I too am using a 5150III 50w and two G12H30s just seems a bit brassy plus I want a little more midrange.

Also tempted to just pull both out for two Heritage G12Ms...

Just look at your old thread for my thoughts on that speaker combo where I mentioned it a few times. I've tried several speakers and cabs with my 50w with the best being the EVH 4x12 but a close second my Splawn 4x12 with V30/H30 X.

Word, thanks guys.

My buddies Mesa was brand new, we bought it yesterday. And I could FINALLY hear that mid-honk that everyone talks about re: the V30s. We could not dial that out, so we thought to swap speakers with each other to 1) tame his cab, and 2) add that cut to mine, though mine sounds great already. It's worth a swap to try it out.

However, he needs to break those V30s in first. They sounded really harsh with his set up. He plays a Les Paul with a 500T in the bridge and it was just too much with that amp and those speakers combined. Mine sounded warmer, but his was slightly louder. Interesting to compare the two cabs with the same amp and different guitars.

My guess is that a JB humbucker would be way too much with this amp and V30s, but I could be wrong.

Hmmmm... My Dr. Z is a partially open back cab, and I'm reading that a V30 is best in a closed back. I've already considered adding a back panel to it to make it convertible, but the back is cut in a way that I could possibly do 2 back panels, and I want to just close up the one of the speakers like the V30. Has anyone ever seen something like this?

I have this very combo in 2 412 randall cads and will not look back,I found the tonez!!!!

My concerns is my cab is semi-open back and I have heard that V30's do not sound great in some open back cabs.

I am wondering if a WGS Vet30 or Retro 30 are the way to go. Ideally, I want a V30-esque speaker to mix with the G12h 30 that isn't as harsh as a Celestion V30 (can be) has good bass response in a semi-open back.

Here's some photos of my cab:

It is a great mix!! I had this mix in my Dr Z Best cab and it rocked with the Engl Savage 120 and the Bogner Shiva EL34!!!

But what about semi-open back cabs?! I know it is great in closed back cabs, which makes me want to make a back panel for this cab. This is not a Z Best, but it sounds way huge! I love it!
