V30's vs. M75's

I have been using M75's (high powered/larger dust cap) for a while now and had some ET65's and Celetion E80's prior to that. I have not used V30's in over 10 years but I remembered them being crunchy and bright. How do they compare to the M75's per the forums opinion? I am not looking for "that one is better" etc... just for some words like "I find the X's crunchier/brighter/darker". Thanks.

Depends what you're playing and what amp. I went through a few 2x12's and i used some M75's. They're pretty dark speakers to me, darker than V30's IMHO. I have a Mesa 4x12 with V30's and there's nothing harsh about it at all. I mean, even if i plug an amp in and there's too much high end, just adjust the tone knobs of them amp.

But for style of music and which speaker, I'd pick V30's for metal by a long shot. For classic rock or VH style tones I'd go with M75's.

I have both and like both. It really depends on the amp and guitar combo which I like better, but in most cases I prefer the M75's as they break up in a more pleasant manner IMO. Speakers are one of those things (like pickups) where you really need to try them in your own rig and see what works...they can be very different things to different players and different setups.

Guys , for clarification, are we talking M75's as in the scumbacks right?

This is great. Never seen this before. I'm not a big V30 fan, but in this comparison, it was the winner for me. No mud, good presence and fatness.
To my surprise the M75 Ceramic 65w was quite dark and bit muddy for my tase. It's a type of sound, sounds great alone, but gets lost in a mix pretty soon.

I had a quad of Mesa V30s and 65w M75s in identical Bogner 4x12s side by side for testing. The V30s sounded a little darker and lacked top end, though the upper mids were quite present. The M75s were a little looser, but more balanced, and had a very complex midrange where the V30s started sounding flat.

I tested with an EL34 20th Anniv. Ecstasy. With 6L6s though, I might have preferred the V30s due to the slightly tighter bass response, added mids and cut highs.

For cleans, the V30s were lifeless and flat. The M75s, on the other hand, sounded full, lush, and bouncy.

Thanks, nice comparison.

I personally liked the Celestion V30s the best. Clear, more open.

At what sort of volume?

Pretty much my findings as well with a RM100 running EL34's and several different modded modules. Good to know that I am not crazy.

Loud. Not cranked, but loud.

I completely agree with you on the V30s. However, I was never a fan of Rivera amps.
My second choice would be the G12H30.

+1, I think they are great for recording

It really depends on the amps you are using. V30's in a 4x12 with most high gain amps sound great IMO. They sound great with PWE Event Horizon, Suhr PT100, Deizel VH4, etc..

V30's sound horrid with my CA OD2, any Fender (even a Bassman).

M75's sound dull with my CA OD2, but awesome with Plexi clones such as my old Germino Fillmore, Club 40, my old Metro Plexi 50, my sons 2203/Roccaforte clone, PT100.

Get my drift?

Here's my son's amp while I was testing some M75's:
