However, the live version of "Memories" off of Dreaming #11 EP is arguably the best performance of his I have ever heard.

+1. My first venture into each as well. There are some good ones after but these are at the top of the list.

For Satriani it would be Time Machine. Studio first side and excellent live performances on disc two. Rubina/Circles/Drum Solo/Lords of Karma/Echo flow so well together it's unreal. Extremist is excellent as well. That era was his pinnacle of production quality. Live in San Francisco is really good too - he was still using his Marshall 6100 and Chromeboys.

For Vai I'm probably gonna have to choose Eat em & Smile and for Satch Surfing with the Alien. Those two tab books were like my guitar bibles when I was 16. Good times.
