Sounds cool but I'll take a semi-dry tone over that any day.

+1. Too much processing for me. Especially to use as a main sound.

His main sound is un-effected, completely dry center.

It`s the whole package combined that makes it HUGE sounding.

I love it.

The biggest part of what is giving that sound it's character is the W/D/W setup and an Eventide H3000 harmonizer set for delay and micropitchshift. (-9 cents/500ms delay Left, +9 cents/250ms delay Right, center cab is just the sound from the amp). Almost any high gain amp is gonna sound like this tone with that setup. Cool tone for sure, easy to get with an H3000 or similar harmonizer, although the Eventides have a pretty unique sound to me...

Steve

You must have this answer on notepad and just cut and paste it :D

Love this tone and have the patch on my H3000.

God damn, i`m an avid Van Halen fan from back in the day but this has got to be in the top Halen tones.

Balance to me is probably my favorite album from them and i heavily trip on Women and Children First and Van Halen II.

91-95' were stellar years for VH. his tone with the 5150, Bradshaw rig, EBMM, wireless, was just great. so was his playing. have to admit though, his playing and tone on the current tour are outstanding. so good to have him back

He always has good tones, be it tha Brown sound, the slightly chorusy 1984-5150 to the F.U.C.K-Balance detune to todays dryer more in your face tone.

He has THE fingers folks, he just does.

I always wondered how you would translate this tone to the FOH with mic'ing.

Use 3 channels on the board, pan the wets and center the dry?

I had read somewhere (recently, in fact) that for FOH, EVH sends the W/D/W mic'd signals as well as the Palmer PDI03 direct signal, and the FOH guy blends them all to create the tone we hear in the PA.

That is correct, sir!

So then, this spawns my next question: if the soundguy isn't panning (just mixing levels) then why have 2 wet cabs? Wouldn't it sound the same FOH if you had a single wet and a single dry cab? You can run this combo of delays/pitch shift to one cab and make it sound the same as two cabs FOH.

I apologize, don't mean to derail the thread. I'm sure this has been hashed out somewhere in this forum before. I've just been very curious about how to translate a W/D/W rig in a live setting because I'm thinking about giving it a shot. It sounds like it's all in the hands of an experienced engineer.

No, the soundguy IS panning them. Left cab hard left, Center cab, center, Right cab, hard right. No one said the cabs weren't being panned by the soundguy. They'd have to be panned that way to preserve the thickening, chorusy effect of the micropitchshifting...

I think at that time he was typically using the 5150 combo's, in addition the rack stuff of course.

H3000s and SDE-3000s were the bulk of the rack stuff.

Cool tone but I prefer VHII tone to anything else that he's ever done.

And what's with the complaints about Sammy's lyrics? The forum's estrogen levels spiked in this thread...what self respecting male rocker pays attention to the lyrics??? :poke: :D
