I
I didn't understand it when they chose him but I loved 5150 when I heard it. Van Halen reinvented themselves and cor me personally, it is like two separate bands. Even Ed's gear, look, etc changed. I think he did the guitar hero thing and decided to be more than that.

The DLR stuff is my favorite but tons of Hagar songs I love.
I like the guitar in some hagar era VH, but it became more polished, and that raw edge, was gone. I don’t ever remember driving along, and just being shocked, yet simultaneously thrilled and wildly excited as I listen to his guitar playing, often for the thousandth time, as I did with Roth era. Id always notice a little part or moment I hadn’t paid too much attention to, and have my mind blown all over again. I remember listening to panama when Roth talks of easing his seat back, and the guitar at that point is absolute perfection for that moment in the song, and rewinding it over, and over, and over again. EVH came up with a perfect part for the right moment every time. And there were so many moments like that for me, girl gone bad had quite a few. It felt as if half the EVH magic was gone.

I know this is an unpopular opinion on rigtalk, but it’s just how I feel about Van Halen. It was like this mighty unstoppable titan of glorious rock came to a grinding halt and was replaced with top 40 commercial rock and HAGAR.

And then videos like, “Right Now,” came out, and VH is making social commentary about safe sex, racism, possibly minimum wage?, and a whole bunch of gibberish meant to be seen as profound deep thought. The video, and that song, to me, were so un-Van halen’esque. But, if I remember correctly, that video cleaned up at awards shows.

I can only imagine the albums they would have made if Roth was there for a couple more albums. Whoa…../

?
i never really put much thought into why hagar wasn’t as cool as roth until now. not as witty and as clever as a lyricist with limited subject matter.
trying to be love song melodic in a “i think i’m bitchin” himbo pop way vs dave tribal shout sing scream style and pouring fuel on the fire with enough hyper-arrogance to match ed and al’s intensity. dave and the boys clawed themselves out of the gutter together. sam was more karaoke legend. i liked summer nights…

half the time i don’t even know what roth is singing, and don’t care because the early vh vibe is so intense!
Word.

I liked Sammy in Montrose and as the early solo Red Rocker

I like some stuff in Van Hager but as we all know, and as already stated, two totally different bands. I think Edward liked the idea of Sammy because 1.) Sammy would play along better and do as told, 2.) Edward was heading in a more melodic/pop direction anyway, and 3.) Ed wanted more keyboards and a bigger chunk of the radio market/populous. That last part is more of a guess :dunno:

Sam didn’t necessarily do as told that’s why there was very little of the DLR era catalog in the live set when he joined the band. Sam and Ed had there issues after the love affair of the 5150 album and tour

I noticed a change in the band with the 1984 album which I'm not a big fan of . I pretend the Hagar era never existed .

As mentioned, the OU812 album sounds much better remastered. I feel like they leaned FUCK out a bit... which I can't say I am a fan of. As far as Sammy vs Dave... both versions have Eddie playing... so I'm down either way. I look at Dave VH as a boogie rock band. Van Hagar I see as a maturing rock band. FUCK is by far my favorite Van Halen album. I thought that was Eddie at the height of his writing and playing. I feel like some of the early albums he was trying way too hard to be Holdsworth in some of the solos. That said, I could start the day with VH1 and work my way through to Balance and it would be a great music day.
