I know this is an unpopular opinion on rigtalk, but it’s just how I feel about Van Halen. It was like this mighty unstoppable titan of glorious rock came to a grinding halt and was replaced with top 40 commercial rock and HAGAR.
And then videos like, “Right Now,” came out, and VH is making social commentary about safe sex, racism, possibly minimum wage?, and a whole bunch of gibberish meant to be seen as profound deep thought. The video, and that song, to me, were so un-Van halen’esque. But, if I remember correctly, that video cleaned up at awards shows.
I can only imagine the albums they would have made if Roth was there for a couple more albums. Whoa…../
I like the guitar in some hagar era VH, but it became more polished, and that raw edge, was gone. I don’t ever remember driving along, and just being shocked, yet simultaneously thrilled and wildly excited as I listen to his guitar playing, often for the thousandth time, as I did with Roth era. Id always notice a little part or moment I hadn’t paid too much attention to, and have my mind blown all over again. I remember listening to panama when Roth talks of easing his seat back, and the guitar at that point is absolute perfection for that moment in the song, and rewinding it over, and over, and over again. EVH came up with a perfect part for the right moment every time. And there were so many moments like that for me, girl gone bad had quite a few. It felt as if half the EVH magic was gone.I didn't understand it when they chose him but I loved 5150 when I heard it. Van Halen reinvented themselves and cor me personally, it is like two separate bands. Even Ed's gear, look, etc changed. I think he did the guitar hero thing and decided to be more than that.
The DLR stuff is my favorite but tons of Hagar songs I love.
