only downfall ..i cant STOP playing ..and Damn it Heavy to lug but worth it

Hey gtr31,

I bought a Rocktron Vendetta amp head last year. The previous owner had Channel 4 modified by Bruce Egnater to make it similiar to Channel 3. One of the best amp heads I've ever owed!! I have to agree that the tone you can get on all the channels sound killer. I don't mind the weight because it's a real amp head, not a digital modeler. My guitar playing buddy who gigs in a Van Halen tribute always calls me up to borrow my Vendetta for his gigs. I told him that I will have to find him a used Rocktron Vendetta soon or he might want to keep my amp.

How does the Vendetta compare to Egnater amps or boutique heads?????? As good???? It seems versatile as hell!

Thanks!

Hey Rich,
It sounds great ,warm .a little darker and smooth .Ive seen it compared to A bogner and a HK triamp .
I was going the Mod 50 route but unfortunatley i got a big car bill and couldnt spend 1600 on the amp.
Anyway I bought the Vendetta, the build quality is great the midi works great .I think this model has a lil more gain than the TOL but it comes from the same platform I use channel 4 with gain around six and it sounds great .again its very smooth not as much bark as a Marshall really more refined than that
the best refrences i can make is some amps are like Muscle cars very Raw and in your face with a very rough ride .other amps like HK are more like a Jaguar XJS very smooth, rich easy to dial in, almost plays itself. The Egnater falls into the latter .it depends on which type you prefer

the clean is great more Voxy ,sparkle than the Fendery voice of say a Rivera but it can be set almost acoustic like in Modern mode with the Mids rooled back and it sounds even better with a lil verb, delay

I am really interested. I want a 6L6 louded amp for clean to heavy modern rock. I was looking at the Peavey 5150, Engl Powerball, Laney VH100R, Vendetta, and maybe a used RIvera.

I have 34s in Mine but a lot of people are raving about the 5881 in the mod 50s kind a cross between the El and 6l6. I wouldnt say the Egnater has as much gain as a Powerball ,Or Recto and isnt as modern voiced .I think a mod 50 with an MHG or Sl2 or maybe even a Randall Grail mod might be more up your alley for Modern gain tones ..the Egg is more HK Duotone .Triamp smoootth rock tones ,nice cleans

I have an H&K Switchblade and Rivera K-100 that both give me those smooth rock, hard rock and metal tones so I was looking for somethign abit more aggressive like the Powerball.

I am always hung up on quality though and sometimes get caught up in the boutique companies which doesn't always mean better tone in my experience. I have been trying to research aggressive 6L6 amps, Engl, Peavey, Mesa, Laney, Elmwood(?), and so on....

Rich .this is IMO ..
no one amp is going to do it all but i suggest if you can afford say 2000 new look at the Egnater Mod 50 . you will have 2 dual channels modules all Midi switching .can change the power tubes 6l6 ,34, 5881. you could get it loaded with a twin/deluxe for the clean/blues and a Erect would do the modern thing plus give you 2 settings one for lead one for Rythm.
Again IMO the Egnater cleans will beat out your Switchblade and will match your Rivera .the Erect is very tight and ballsy but doesnt have that buzzy type gain.. Imo you could probably sell the HK and just keep the Rivera to do the Marshall thing OR you could buy an EG SL2 and just change out the mods ..

good luck

You have me really tempted but I prefer to only by used these days.....

You never see these on ebay, but I watch.

The Switchblade is so convenient because it is all in one.

And....sometimes I like the simplicity of a two channel tube head.

You said the MOD has rhtyhm and lead settings. Does it have a mid/volume boost also in the lead?

depends on the model the EG3/4 has a bit different voicing .the ERECT is the same BUT it has a seperate level and seperate gain so in fact you can use a Rythm level and a Lead lvl plus carank the gain a lil more for lead .the EGG tones are pretty Mid rich so i wouldn,t worry about the mid boost .for example i can play Ch4 on the Vendetta for rythm or lead. the Erect preamp is actually very similar to the Soldano voicing if you turn up the mids .pop in 5881 and your closer still but with great cleans to boot

Man, buying a new amp is one of the toughest things to do! If I went Egnater MOD, I would have to pick between MOD 100 or 50. If I sold my H&K Switchblade and Rivera...I could afford it...otherwise I'd be getting the MOD 50. Honestly, if I waited till Fall, I could probably get the MOD 100 only for the three channels!

I am on the fence with these amps:
Marshall JVM, Mesa Roadster, Egnater MOD 50, H&K Triamp MK II, Rivera Knucklehead Reverb 100 and a Rocktron Vendetta I found used.

Just my opinion - but I prefer my Randall gear (RM4 and RM100) over the JVM and switchblade by far. Again, just my opinion. With the right modules, you can have a great country, classic rock, hard rock, heavy metal, death metal, Jazz, whatever rig.

Thanks! That is why I am leaning toward the Egnater MOD head plus the low power setting for practice and low volume gigs! Plus, I also like the ability to swap in tones and I hear over and over that the Egnater version is head and shoulders in build and tone above the Randall so it should be great!

Rich ,
If you can afford it go Egnater ..hands down .

I used it last night we were auditioning singers.,

I usually use the DSL that our rehersal stocks ..
last night i brought the Vendetta .I can honestly say beyond a shadow of doubt .It was the BEST tone ive ever had .I used one channel for Ryth/lead and EVERY note cut and sang.

My rythm was Smooth and tight with great definition ..I may buy the Mod 50 but I really dont see a reason that I would use another amp.
It just sits great in the mix ..not enough low end to mix with the bassist and have mud .not a really sharp biting freq.just real warm ,smooth

So, if I could afford to have the Egnater you think that would be my best bet and skip looking for a used Vendetta or older TOL?

What do you use for leads? I was thinking an external EQ since I like a heavy rhythm sound and then lots more mids for lead.

I think the Mod 50 ..(depending on module will give ya more Gain and a more & bottom end.

I currently dont use anything to boost leads .Believe it or not the tone i use has enough drive and clarity for tight hard rock rythm and then when i go into a lead i just dig in a little harder .

the amp is voiced for very thick rich single notes and has tons of sustain ..so i dont use my trusty OD box..

I honestly think that between 4 footswitchable sounds .MIDI control .Power tube choices ..you have no trouble conjuring up 99% of the tones you want .in one amp .without having to use a bunch of crap on the floor .I think if you dig the HK sound you should check the Egg its similar in smoothness and warmth to my ears although a little darker ..

Thanks man! I love smooth and warmth with tons of gain assuming it cuts a mix well!

I am also really tempted on a Mesa Roadster.....but the Egnater has so much to offer.
One post in this forumwas talking about the incredible sustain of the Roadster and thickness. I need to play one.

I am sure the modules have a lot of thickness and clarity for leads but I have a desire to always have lots of mids.....plus the external EQ/boost gives a nice volume boost for leads....unless the lesser of the two gain modes of the modules have enough for heavy rhythm. Then I could just use master two for leads.

""unless the lesser of the two gain modes of the modules have enough for heavy rhythm. Then I could just use master two for leads.""

...Exactly ..thats the purpose of the dual master/dual gain .an MHG has more gain then youd ever need .My Vendetta which is supposed to be a Hot rod TOL ..my gain is at 6 on the hottest channel in Modern mode ..its enough for me
