Vh4 channel 4

Hi,
I'm having a little problem:
in my 2008 Vh4 (ruby 12ax7ac5hg+/hg - sed El34) is difficoult to make channel 4
sounds more heavier and brutal then channel 3.
Of course ch4 has more gain but it also adds a lot of compression and the tone looses
the definition and articulation of ch3.

My ch4 EQ settings:

-bass 1
-middle 12
-treble 1
(deep and presence 12.30)

I'd like to make ch4 more usable also on rhythm parts and not only for leads.

Thanks. :)

In my experience, the highest or higher gain channel on an amp is going to indeed sound more compressed and have less punch than the others, simply due to perhaps voicing. If the EQ settings you're referring to are in the O'Clock vein, I'd suggest cranking the mids up a bit as well as possibly the Treble for more definition.

A lower gain preamp tube should open up some of that compression. I tried a NOS Mullard 12AT7, but it became microphonic so I'm on the hunt for something more reliable. Someone suggested a JAN-Phillips 5751.

I've defaulted back to all 12AX7s (except V3, which has a 12BZ7 for more saturated gain on channels 2 thru 4). When I had the AT7 in V2 it balanced nicely.

Here's a quick look at reliability ratings according to The Tube Store.

Hope this helps!

Why not use Channel 3 then?

I have the same problem with my Herbert. Channel 2+ and channel 3 on the Herbert is really close to channel 3&4 on the VH4. Channel 2+ (your 3) is such a great sound, crunchy, dynamic and very open sounding. Seems a lot of that open sounding quality is lost on the top channel from all the compression.

Have you tried a different guitar? I've learned some of my guitars just won't get along with the lead channel, and some still sound ok. Mainly, my guitars with Active pickups just get too compressed on the lead channel, but my guitars with Alnico passives will let me squeek by playing rythm on the lead channel.

Try replacing the V2, and/or try these settings first.

Gain: 12-1:00 (Careful, this channel gets smokin' after 10:00)
Treble- 2:00
Middle- 10:00
Bass- 1-2:00

Presence- 12:00
Deep- 10:00

I agree with RJF on Active's. They really require you to keep turning the gain down until they stop compressing.
The VH4 loves low output pickups. With pickups in the 7.0-9.0 range the amp screams like a demon.
I experience this many years ago when I could get shred tones from a Tele.

I never had that issue w/my vh4...recently got a herbert and notice a lot of simularities on ch 2+(vh4-3) and ch 3(vh4-4) though.....
