The UL doesnt what so ever need a boost. People use a slight boost to tighten everything up a tiny bit. The savage doesnt need one either but it does sound tighter with a slight boost but by no means has more gain. you shouldnt be playing with your gain past 2 oclock max anyways on a high gain amp.

i had both a savage se and a ultra lead at the same time. loved the ul so much i traded the savage se for another pittbull ul so i had a spare.

i could not figure out the cab a/b switch on the savage se. could not get it to run two cabs at once (though both output jacks) unless i daisy-chained them into one output. the engl sounded great!! but i am deff a VHT UL fanboy. way more tight and focused. raw.

Thats the answer I was looking for. Tight and focused is worth its weight in gold to me! Im not a big fan of the "flubby" gain like Mesas have. Im gonna keep my UL and maybe pick up a Savage later on or somethin'...

What really set them apart for me was the feel and response. The UL was very stiff and dry sounding and lacked any type of playing dynamics whereas the ENGL seemed to respond much better to a varied touch...odd in that the ENGL was more compressed which usually squashes dynamics??? The ENGL was also a warmer sounding amp...the UL sounded almost solid state-like to me with very little warmth or bloom to the notes.
