video 1977 Marshall 2203 pushed with a modded tube screamer

And this is why I own three stock old Marshalls and a vintage TS-9, and SD-1 and Maxon OD-808, and DOD OD250 and MXR Distortion +. And this is why I scratch my head when all I read about are modded Marshall this and modded Marshall that. And then there's the cost of these mods in the $600 to $1000 range.

THIS is what an old MV JMP sounds like with a pedal. And to you guys thinking that the modded Tube Screamer is the holy grail part of achieving this tone, IMO it isn't because these amps sound very similar with stock TS-9's too. Most of the mods for Tube Screamer take away the midrange hump but that hump is what gets you heard in the context of a full mix. I'm not saying Marshall Law's mod to his TS-9 isn't cool, I'm just saying that these amps sound phenomenal with one of the right boost pedals with them. Like '70 strathead also said....... that's what these should sound like.

They won't have tons of modern low end. They won't have tons of modern saturation or gain. They will rock.

Great, now I have to go find a JMP

Awesome sounding clip. Exactly what I would want!

here is my 1977 Marshall JMP 2203 pushed with a modded Tube screamer, I bought a TS-9 mod kit off eBay it made the pedal killer, settings on the TS-9, level all the way up, gain off and tone at 11 o"clock, with a Gibson Les Paul Standard, If this video looks familiar to you it is because Brian and I shot this video at the same time we shot Gregs video, my amp is the one on top duh   anyway never mind the playing  I should have tuned up my guitar (straight out of the case)

I think it sounds sweet!

Fuck yeah, man. That is saturated as hell!

That is what my '77 JMP 2203 used to sound like before it started having issues.

definately a perfect combination right there. The 2203's were just as different each as the older ones. You got a keeper there for sure.

KILLAH!!! I have a '79 that's been modded to hell - EL34's, gain mod, dedicated clean channel (yup, a channel switcher), fx loop, foot switchable extra Master Volume.......

Yours sounds awesome, man. NICE!

And this is why I scratch my head by these comments because I had a stock Marshall and a stock tubescreamer and Ive never been able to get a sound like that out of a stock Marshall and ts period. Im not ruling out pilot error but not many guys back in the day in these parts had that sound either ,so I'm at a loss here.

You're hearing it right here in this video. You can hear it at my house in 2011. You could have heard it at my house in 1984. I think those east coast Marshalls were just depressed. They had been built in cold, drizzly, gray England and when they heard the shipping department say ship this one to the USA, they got so excited. You know they were picturing hanging out at the beach in Los Angeles. "I had a drink in my hand, I had my toes in the sand and whoa........". But no. Their delivery plane stopped too soon and those poor Marshalls were unloaded into the cold, gray, drizzly east coast. Can you blame them for not being all that enthused?

Sounds killer! Gotta look for this TS-9 kit you speak of...got a link to the seller you got it from Troy?

Well, spent an hour with my 77 jmp nmv with ppimv and every boost pedal I had and nothing close to this clip :D

A ptp board was dropped into this amp though and not sure what the circuit is to be honest, all I know is that was one wasted hour

EL34 or 6550's in that monsta? I have an early 80's JCM, I love it. Mine has 6550's though and seems a tad flat or lacking in grind though so I have always used a boost with it. It loves my Dod YJM modded to grey specs though.

No, What I'm hearing in this video is a MODDED TS-9. or something else!

With that said, there is no doubt that the East Coast Marshalls were depressed and they definitely would rather be in LA ahhahahaha!

the ts9 is just pushing this amp, the level all the way up, gain off, it is a fantastic amp all by itself, but pushing it makes it tighter and more gnarly and best of all this will piss some of you off, it has all JJ tubes 4-E34L's and 3-12ax7's from euro tubes
