Well since your digging the Bass right now, I will gladly keep the Landry warm at my house until you decide you want it back.

Keep dreamin!!!! :D

It was worth a shot Chris, you look reeeeeaaaally good playing the Bass.

I usually played bass with a pick in the first place. I used to play a helluva lot more bass than guitar, because none of the bands I jumped into when I lived up north were into shred guitar and 5th chords, which is just about all I can do on the 6-string. I have an MTD bass, a Sansamp PSA-1, and a 250 watt Rocktron Power amp in a rack, just in case :D (I also downloaded the bass pack for my POD xt pro, so I`m fairly covered, what bass is concerned. I love playing the bass as well, but I`d like to get a 15" or an 18", and a big ass power amp, just to have the bas(s)es covered :D

Natural Light FTW!

I think that sounds pretty damn good. I think fresh strings are key to a great bass tone, even more so than guitar IMO. You have way better chops playing with your fingers than I do, but I prefer playing bass with a pick. I think all guitar player should try playing bass at some point just to broaden your horizons. I had the opportunity to play bass in a band and I'm glad I did. I thought singing and playing bass couldn't be much different than singing and playing guitar. Boy was I WRONG! It was like someone ripped off my arms and reattached them on the opposite sides.

And what's that Orange combo you got there?

I'm switching back to bass for a while. I just got a smoking deal on a new USA Fender Jazz Bass and Acoustic B200 combo. I'm VERY pleased with the tone!!!

I made this video last night while practicing. I've got alot of work ahead of me to get my plucking hand to work with my fretting hand, but I'll get there in time. It started coming together more towards the end of the video, but whatever.

I run through some different pickup/tone settings on the bass as I stumble around in this video. I think the tone is pretty sick myself! What do you guys think?

Ha, you make me wanna lay a drum track to that shit.

I like the tone of that when you where slapping that bass like it was your bitch.

Speaking of that, does anyone have any drum backing tracks that I can use to practice along with? ANYTHING will work. It's not really much fun playing bass without drums. I just don't have a single drum backing track.

Try:

Also, do a search on google too, try "drum tracks download" or add free to the search.

Mostly a bass player here. Played guitar as a kid, to early 20s then switched to bass 'cause we could rarely find a bass player. Since bass players were always in short supply, I had more opportunities to play too, than if a was a rhythm guitar / second lead. I consider myself a bass player more than a guitarist FWIW.

If I could only get the knack of laying down drums, I have soft-drums for my keyboards, but can't seem to translate what I want on drums through the keys!

Name a tempo and a beat, and I'll lay down something basic.

Sonar was screwing with me. I set it to 100BPM click, and about 20 measures into it, it jumped to 140. I'd reset it, it'd jump to 140 again later. I guess that's what I get for creating a template with 140 as the tempo setting...lol

This is a loopable clip though...not bad for recording/playing drums to a click for the first time.

Oddly, I noticed it "kinked" a bit, so it's still 140 BMP, but it's not right on the beat markers. fucking sonar...lol(ok, it's the user)

LOL!!! The guys on the bass forum are telling me I need to relax a bit and I think they're totally right. I need to lay back a little, so when I pluck the strings, they don't slap against the frets and have too much of that "click." Of course, guys like Steve Harris always have tons of that click and they're doing okay.

I love the funk slap sound like flea, I know I have a tin ear but I hear that in his playing as well.

Well crap. Those are midi files and very short. I don't have a program to loop them into longer tracks, then burn them to a CD to use for practice. I'd like to get a bunch of different beats that last around 5 minutes long each on a CD.

After watching that video of me playing, do you have any advice for me? I'd love to hear it.

For LH / RH coordination using your fingers, practice scales (don't have to be anything too complex) and try to use your index, middle and ring finger. get into different alternating patterns - using all three fingers, triplets become addictive, but don't get too set on one pattern. Try the index(1), middle(2), ring(3) in different patterns: 1-2-3, 3-2-1, 3-1-2, as coordination exercises etc. Using 1 & 2 is also fine, but try and get at least 2 fingers going and controlled.

For funk slap, its pop (hook under a string index finger) and slap (thumb) using your wrist as the pivot point. (I played in a band in the early '90s where we did some RHCP, great fun!)

Here are some good videos on slap and pop technique: http://www.expertvillage.com/video/48821_advanced-bass-rhythm-slap-pop-progression.htm
