Satchel (Russ) is a terrifyingly good guitarist. like off the charts.

Russ is killer - so at ease with the guitar, like he is one with it! And his tone lately is awesome using the EVH III amps and Kramer guitars. Maybe it IS all in the fingers!?

+1000 tone def. is in the fingers because this guy can hit it with a 5150, a DSL, a XXX, hell a Bugera. He just has great phrasing , timing, and vibrato.

I used to watch Dio "Live at the Spectrum" every day after school. Viv just ruled back then.
I was at that show,my very first concert. Twisted Sister opened. i think i was around 15 or 16 years old.

Holy Diver was the reason I started to play guitar and Dio's voice set a standard noone's ever reached in my musical history..

It brought tears to my eyes to see Viv play that solo again ... and NAIL it.

Thanks for posting !!

I always loved that Dio album because when it came out, I read (in a magazine) that Viv used stock JCM800 heads. The tone was always pure tube, and very Marshall - which I loved. Plus, I could play Rainbow In The Dark (except for the lead of course) when I first learned guitar, which was very encouraging!

Holy shit. Viv absolutely nailed that solo. Guys his age cant come close to pulling off the solos the way they did 27 years ago! Damn he is as cool as he was when I first heard him!

He also used a Boss Distortion and an Invader pickup

Love Steel Panther, just killer rock every time. Great to see the old Belfast boy Viv play all the guitar parts by hisself. Amazing as in Leppard, I can't hear Viv over Phil's rack excess tone.
Great vocals as well!!

Here's what Viv had to say about it:

I was in Anaheim for the NAMM show yesterday and afterwards I got up on stage with Steel Panther at the House of Blues and played "Rock of Ages" and "Rainbow in the Dark". It's only been a few weeks since I played "ROA", but it's been 27 years since I had to play the solo in "Rainbow in the Dark". Wow, that's a tough solo to pull off, but I think I got away with it!
