OK, I have swapped plaenty of tubes in and out of my Mod 50 but I think what I am looking for most is warmth and smoothness with some growl......but growl comes from lots of factors. Anyone care to chime in on which are the smoothest? I am thinking E34Ls or 6550s.

Best two tubes you should try for the Mod50 is either the Groove Tube E34L's or the Tung Sol 6550s. I personally love the TS 6550s in the Mod50. It's the best 6550 SPECIFICALLY for the Mod50. Still think the Svetlana 6550s sound best in the Mod100 and RT2/50.

Agree with Eric, you gotta try TS 6550's fantastic tubes for the Mod.

I honestly think these ARE my favs, and I like alot of different tubes in the Mod50.

The Svets sound good in it, but I need to try the TS's!

JJ E34Ls are basically the same as GT E34Ls so I might try those. GT rebrands the JJs and adds some features which in my opinion are not a good idea, LOL. Anyway, I might start ordering some JJ E34Ls since they are cheaper than the 6550s.

I want to try TS 6550s also! I've dug Svetlana 6550s very much so far, let's see if TS are better.

And couple words of Groove Tubes, just tried "matched" set of their EL34. The difference between them was almost 5mvs. I don't know whether this really affects to the sound, but as principle, they are not very closely matched, although they are marketed as tested and matched (and overpriced). In any case, they did not sound as good as 6550s.

Dude man, no offense but you ask a question.......get three of the "same" answers, then go in a different direction to save $20. So why ask in the first place?

Sorry man, just givin' you some grief this morning.........!! :poke:

I prefer the 6550 with the pink Snuggie! Now that is warm!

No Jeff, the tubes with the new "stylish" snuggie's with the leopard spots are the only one's I use!!! They are much better than the old production pink one's!!

I've heard the brown Snuggie makes your tone like Eddies.

I heard that to. IF you use the blue snuggie and take your amp to the movies you have to do the whoop whoop put your hands in the air to get the tone!

Why you ask....because the JJs are the same thing but cheaper. I was trying to be helpful so others can see they don't need to pay inflated GT prices for a rebranded JJ. ;)

Thanks guys on the TS6550s - I am getting some.

Oh, fully agree on the "GT" thing. I won't ever buy those.........I was referring to you going with the E34Ls instead of the 6550's. But now you've come around!! I think you'll like the TS. Get them from Doug or someone good like that though.

I was thinking of the E34Ls ebcause Eric mentioned those as well as the TS6550s. Sorry if I confused you or misspoke. :)

No sweat man.....this is the statement from you above I was referring to:

"Anyway, I might start ordering some JJ E34Ls since they are cheaper than the 6550s."

Just bustin' your chops!!

Honestly, I think you'll like the TS 6550's. I really like them alot.

I tried at least 3 brands of 6550s and KT-88s...

If you're doing 6550s...consider this another recommend for the TS 6550s...and a vote against the JJ 6550s, which sounded like they wanted to be the same as the TS but were flabby and not as clear.

Just for sake of completeness, I actually kept the Svet 6550Cs but preferred their tighter and 'colder' sound to the TS.

HAHA! That's what I meant. He suggested the EL34s or TS 6550s. What I meant to say:

I know lots of people love the JJ KT88s (6550s), but I also hear lots of people like you say the bottom is not tight. Most on the forum say the TS 6550s are much more organic and warmer. You mentioned the Svets are tighter and colder and I think that is what bothers me about them. Might have to get the TS6550s soon.
