Warning for anyone refinishing a neck

I decided to use Tru Oil on the back of one of my necks. I stripped the finish and rubbed this on with a cloth. Now my entire house smells like lacquer. :aww: This wipe-on stuff is a lot stronger than I expected. :lol: :LOL:

Tip - If you're going to do this, do it outside.
 
i had a buddy that bought oil from lowes for a neck he was doing

he didnt pay attention to the fact he bought a can of tru-oil that had an additive sealer involved like what is used on decks :shocked:

so he wanted me to fix it, and ill never forget how bad that neck was all sticky and just in awful shape, i felt bad for the guy :(

but yeah i prefer tung-oil for most necks, only downside is that it can turn a pure white maple neck into a dark piece of wood rather quickly. love how it plays though.

you're supposed to use pure "Tung" Oil.

It's really hard to get..

Tru Oil and Tung Oil are different. I'm using Birchwood Casey's Tru Oil on purpose. This is the same stuff that EBMM uses.
 
French polish is the best. If you make your shellac with everclear you can drink what you don't use. :thumbsup:

danish oil, linseed oil, tung oil, etc are all my favorites. a tung oil finish applied properly is my favorite - very smooth and does not have a stick attitude when your hands get to sweating.

its great for the wood as well.

TBH though, every one of my guitars right now are raw maple necks - no oils or finishes. i keep a close eye on the truss rod's of each and adjust accordingly. only downside is they hate moisture - go into my buddies basement to play and the whole guitar will tune itself out of tune :lol: :LOL:

i need to get some more oil and seal a few of them.
 
I don't have the stomach to refinish my own guitar. Too worried I'd mess up. Wish I could though. Could definitely be a lot of fun. I'll keep that recommendation in mind if I ever decide to go for it though :thumbsup:

Pure Tung Oil is not a recommended finish for a guitar neck.

Tung Oil finishes like "Minwax" have polymers that make easier to use while giving the feel of oil.

Tru Oil is a Birchwood Casey product, and dries to a hard, sealed finish that can buffed to a high gloss if desirable.

Danish Oil (Watco brand) is what Charvel uses.

I use Watco or Tru Oil for necks
 
Hate on poly all you want - but I've had incredible results with Minwax Wipe on Satin Poly on necks.

Super smooth satin-y finish. Very moisture resistant. Doesn't get sticky. And believe it or not, it starts to get a nice yellow aged vintage-esque hue over time.
