I want some new pickups for my Les Paul and am considering the WCR Godwood/Darkburst set. They seem to be very low output, but I've heard some nice clips.

I currently use the Gibson 500T and I've just grown tired of how hot they are. I want something Alnico V with a good organic tone, but something that will sound BALLSY through a JCM 800 w/ boost.

What say you?

Oh hell yes!

I prefer the Crossroads for the neck, rather than the Darkburst. The set of a GW bridge and a CR neck is called the American Steele set. Perfect for what you are after.

Buckcherry uses this set on their latest recordings.

Stoner rock? Gotta be Dimarzio Super Distortion.

Give the Motor City Torque a look. I've put them in my LP and love them for hard rock, yet they still clean up great with the volume knob. Love them so far.

Thanks for the replies guys!

Has anyone compared both the Crossroads and Darkburst in the neck position?

-Joe

I mainly play hard rock/stoner rock/doom. I highly suggest you look at the BG Bucker Dark. I recently put one in the bridge of my LP and it is tonal heaven IMO. I had Bryan at BG custom wind mine up to around 11k. Perfect balance of vintage/modern with extreme clarity and not an ounce of fizz or annoying frequency spikes.

Thanks for the replies dudes!

Those Motor City torque pickups have me VERY interested! I hope they are a good balance of semi-hot, but still articulate and clear!

Which motor city would you recommend in the neck?

thanks

-Joe

I'd say get the Torque set. The neck is around like 8.5k I think. Great clean tone, but awesome under gain as well with very nice clarity. Go ahead and e-mail Wade with your questions/comments and he'll make some recommendations for you. He has always responded to me within a day or two.

They are a bit pricey, but I really dig them.

Nice...thanks man!

You are referring to the output right? I'm just a bit confused why the neck output would be half of the bridge if it's the same pickup?

I've played for over 10 years, but am a technical pickup info newb.

-Joe

Neck pickup is less because the strings vibrate more there as opposed to closer to the bridge. If it were too hot, it would be tough to get a decent clean tone with it. That's the main reason for the differences in output.......balance!!

Gotcha, thanks for the info!

Wade suggested checking out some of the other pickups as well, but said the Torque might be perfect for me.
