weber bias rite question

I just bought a Weber Bias Rite BR-2 (octal set) and i also got a quad of new 6L6GC power tubes for my powerball.
I'm wondering how exactly do i go about biasing a quad of power tubes with just two of the weber socket adapters? Should i just install the quad of power tubes then do two at a time? If so, would i measure the inner pair and then the outer pair?

Following the instructions for biasing on the weber website (https://taweber.powweb.com/biasrite/br_page.htm) will be easy and i know where the bias adjusting socket on the powerball is, so any help with setting up the Bias Rite would be greatly appreciated :thumbsup:

side question: what do you guys use for cleaning the tube sockets...some sort of contact cleaner? I know radioshack sells some, but is that stuff decent enough?

suppose it depends on the tube vendor as much as anything. if you got them from Doug or Willie, i'd just put one on an outside tube and one on an inside tube.


if your not sure how good your vendor matched then you might want to check all of the tubes. like do an inside and an outside, and then move over just to be sure.

some amps can get goofy and read higher closer to the transformer, i have moved a tube that reads low to a socket that reads high.

i usually just set it by which tube reads the hottest, rather than trying to average them together.


Doug (Doug's tubes) has been awesome on matching, i've never had his tubes very more than about a 1/2ma, and i've done lots of quads and even sextets with him.

Willie (aka Lord Vavle) has been just as awesome on matching also.

i use Deoxit D5 as a contact cleaner, it's supposed to be the shiznit! i get it from Willie. to be honest, i probably don't use the cleaner as much as i should.

I got a matched quad of JJ 6L6GCs from Bob over at Eurotubes. I've had great experiences with tubes from him in the past and he seems very particular about tubes, biasing and the like so hopefully these are just as good as previous ones.

The PB takes a matched quad right? So there is one bias adjustment for all 4 tubes. If you bought a matched quad, then they should be close. I have the same BR that you got. I usually stick one in the first tube socket and one in the last one. You will notice that the last tube always will be a little lower in bias if you bias off the first socket. Not much though, but usually I will bias off the last socket, then check the rest. The first will be a little on the high side usually. Make sense?

If you cannot find D-Oxit, any electrical contact cleaner (CRC), etc. will do. Pull the old tube, spray the pins, run it in a out, install new tube.

the Weber one is pretty nice.

my only gripe is the height of the octal base, might be worth getting the right angle bases.


i get the amps in some precarious type moves sometimes while biasing! :lol: :LOL:


the right angles would be nice, or even something deferent with lower profile. there's even stuff around designed to work with a multi-meter.

but yea the Weber's cool.
 
Always check all four tubes no matter who you get the from. Bias mismatches happen and it only takes a few more minutes to do all of them. :thumbsup:
 
I have the BR -4. I like being able to bias all at the same time. I would do the whole set. Bias 2 on one side and then check the other 2. Just to make sure. I had a jcm800 reissue that I was changing tubes in alot. I noticed that the voltage would always be different for each tube. Then I got a Hendrix JH100 and when I biased this one, all the voltages were dead right on. So it was not the bias rite, it was my Jcm 800 that was at fault. When I got my sig x, it was also reading dead on for the voltages. I've had that bias rite for 4 years and used it often and it is built tough.

Usually have mine up on its end,,,balancing on the edge of a tranny with a piece of wood,a pedal,,whatever keeps it upright....and pray to God the damn thing doesnt fall over...LOL
 
thanks to everyone for the advice! i need to pick me up some of that contact cleaner as well.

i now think i might be having a problem with my tube sockets being too loose which i think has been causing all of my problems with the powerball lately.
Anyone tried retentioning tube sockets or should i just look to replace the entire sockets all together?
