Well.... I finally give up on my custom 7 string project...

Some of you may remember I have been trying to build a custom 7 string for over two years now. The first neck I received was twisted so bad they said someone would have to take the fretboard off and do crazy stuff to possibly fix it. Then I waited a year and six months for Christopher Woods to just dick me around and deliver no neck, with no end in site. Then I went to another Ibanez clone custom builder who told me I'd have my neck in 6 months. That came due a month ago - once again no neck in site. I have given up on custom builders. Very few are worth dealing with. I am BEYOND frustrated with the crap I've dealt with...

Anyway, here is what it looked like:

Anyway, I give up on this project! I admit defeat... I'm selling the parts to someone else and moving on. (SEE BELOW)

On the bright side... All I really wanted a really nice Ibanez style 7 string with EMGs, so I found and bought this:

J Custom 7 String

This is pretty much what I wanted except for the finish, but I dig this finish as well... I'm REALLY psych'd to finally have a 7 string again...

I'm going to sell the body and neck shown above (someone can use the painted maple cap on the headstock on a new neck - neck will just be thrown in free in case someone wants to try fixing it or wants the painted maple headstock cap to finish the project) EMG pickup set and Ibanez low pro 7 string floyd to whoever wants it and thinks they can get a neck built... All you need is a neck and a few pots and switches and you have a killer guitar!

Hmmm, I wonder if my Ibanez 7 string's neck would fit? I like that body... Dang dude, that's one heck of a 7 string you bought!

It is made to Ibanez specs and I measured and confirmed it fits their 7 string neck size when I ordered the neck from the last deadbeat...

I've got a lot of cash in the body and paint work though...

Dude - is that J-Custom sick or what? Except for the body finish it is exactly what I wanted...

Yeah, after I mentioned putting my neck on it, I realized that you don't buy cheap shite, so I just sat back hoping you'd be like "bro, I totally stole that body and only paid like $10 for the paint. It's yours for $67.93 and a six pack." ;)

Yeah, that J-Custom is crazy. I might actually be afraid to play it. That's why I stick with my tried and true methodologies. I either buy beaters or I buy something nice, then drop it. Sometimes I'll also take a saw and/or belt sander to the guitar too. That way I don't have to worry about the finish...

The paint alone from Lee at GMW (done by Dan Lawrence) on that body was $400. Ugh... I hate even writing that down... I've got about $700 in that body... Of course I realize I'm not gonna get that for it, but I gotta get a decent chunk. I'd ike to sell all the parts as a package deal...

Get your belt sander ready, I should have this thing in about 2 weeks by my estimate...

Post a review of the J-Custom once you get it. Also, don't forget to install a set of locking studs on the guitar.

I will post a review. What do you mean by locking studs? Is that necessary? You're scaring me... :scared: :)

Every Edge Pro has no locking studs, and you should buy a set of locking studs for it. Trust me on this. The new trems have locking studs, but they're total shit. Those should also have the older locking studs installed.

Cool man - thanks for the heads up...

How much do you want for it?
For just the body or including the Low Pro floyd and nut and EMGs?

BTW - As I said, I'll send you the neck for nothing with this if we work something out. Lee over at GMW and others have told me the cap on the headstock can be saved and used on another neck so you can have the matching headstock and body. Who knows, maybe someone can actually fix it... I was told the fretboard would have to be removed to assess...

Maybe a price for it with and without the parts. I'm not really an EMG guy, but if the price is right :) Did you try putting it together with that neck and couldn't get the action right?

Yes, definitely get the locking studs for it. I bought a UV777 from Rich and requested no locking studs but he hooked me up anyway. About three months after I got the guitar, my friend bought a new RG from a local place without the locking studs and he had tuning problems when using the bar.

The neck is so obviously and severely twisted there was no point to trying to build it as is. I guess there are some ways of getting the twist out, but most just told me to buy another neck...

$600 with the parts (which are brand new, never used). $400 without the parts. This is a complete gift given what I paid for this stuff.

What is the body wood? Maple top and? Is it heavy or light?

Maple and basswood. I find this to be a killer tone combo. Not a heavy body...

Ok - I'll see how the thing stays in tune and take it from there... Thanks!

It's not something that'll happen instantly. Because of Basswood's naturally soft properties, the hole will eventually elongate and go out of round due to the stud moving inside the threaded insert. It might take a month, or it might take a few years. The locks inside the studs not only positively lock the studs inside the threaded inserts (for a more stable return), but they also help prevent unnecessary wear on the threaded insert hole.

Edit: Just realized that the body is Alder. I'd still go with the stud mod, though.
