Took a trip over to GC. Played the Mesa RA100 and Mk V. Really liked both. The RA100 is a great amp. I think I prefer the compression when set to 50 watts. Anyways I took my EBMM JP6 BFR with me. As I'm playing the Mk V I notice a really nice looking Gibson LP Premium Plus in honeyburst with a nice flame top. So I ask them if I could play it. So dude brings it over to me... This guitar was sooooooo thick and throaty sounding. The tone was just killer. Still hate the neck joint but the tone was to die for. I used to not like PRS much. Now I love them. Used to not think much of LPs but this one had some wonderful tone. I really liked this guitar. If I had 3 grand burning a hole in my pocket I would have nabbed it. Anyways looks like Gibson is stepping up their game. The fret work was perfect. The Nut looked clean. The finish was great. The only thing that didn't seem right to me is one of the tail piece studs wasn't down all the way. Not sure if thats ok or not.

Cool find. That's normal for the tail piece not to be snug to the body. I keep mine all the way down but there's no right or wrong.

Well it's not that the tail piece wasn't all the way down but that one of the studs... you know the ring on the stud? that wasn't all the way down to the body. I could see a few of the stud threads. I'll tell you what though man those burst buckers were screaming through that Mk V. It was a sweetass combination!

yeah, that's normal to see some threads, just depends on preference. I like the feel with the tailpiece up a little too, just feels a little more pliable if that makes sense. It's funny, I went thru a similar experience you had this year. Never really thought much of LP's, they just seemed cumbersome to me. FF to this year, and I got a 2012 goldie in a trade. Loved the tone and feel, the instrument plays beautiful, and it's got exceptional build quality. I picked up another 2012 and an 07 R7 after, and I love them both too. Now I'm jonsin for more, lol.

Like I said if I had the 3k... would be playing it right now!!

The closer that the height of the tailpiece is to the bridge, the slinkier the feel of the strings. It gives you a similar feel to top-wrapping the strings. I prefer a top wrap with the tailpiece screwed down tight to the body for more transference.

I have yet to try the RA but am definitely interested in them.

I tried the top wrap for the first time and noticed no difference.

Should be noticeably easier to bend strings. Kinda makes 10's feel almost like 9's.

I've heard that before and like I said it didn't seem to make a bit of difference. Who knows. :dunno:

Did you mean to say Gibson when you said.." I used to not like PRS much."

Man i think 2012 was a good year for gibson.i bought a traditional mahogany satin finish for right at a grand brand new from sam ash. This girl was set up perfectly right out of the box. The 57n and 57+b sound very nice and it can do the brutes no problem. The finish was great as well.

I have had her for two weeks now and have put her through the ringer and I fall in love each time. I have looked her over several times over and have yet to discover a flaw of any sorts.

By the way she smells yummy and cant figure out if it the guitar or the case that smells so sweet... This is the first Gibby I have ever owned that smelt that way...

No. What I'm getting at is that stuff I used to not like seems more appealing these days. Not sure why but...
