Well shit, got asked to join a band playing bass............

I switch off to bass duties in my cover band on about seven tunes a night when we do gigs and I find it to be a lot of fun. It makes me view songs a bit differently than I do on guitar since it's more about locking in with the drummer while still supporting some melody. I find it good to keep my brain fresh and also lay back and listen to my kick ass female singers sing for once :)

Natas with an 8x8 enclosure, a chorus pedal, and channeling Steve Harris galloping through every song regardless of what it is.

They are going to LOVE me.

For authentic Steve Harris stage presence, foot on the monitor at all times, mouth ALL the lyrics all the time and wear a checkerboard Fastway T shirt :D

i got asked last year...made more money than ever....im a better guitar player than any of the guitarists i ever play with whilst im on bass....funny how shit works out......anyhow...bass is weird for a gig or 2 then by the end of 6 months u will be pro

Just so everyone knows, I played bass for years. Sight read jazz in HS for the stage band and played for most of the 80s, everything from hair to Tears for Fears to the Daz Band. I will have to brush up and build my right finger calluses up, picks are for posers

Sounds like the perfect gig to me. Gotta wear a Fastway shirt and put your foot on the monitor for most of the show too. Maybe some black and white striped spandex to complete the package. Oh, and work so hard "sweat was coming out of the eyelets of my sneakers", as Steve would say :)

If it pays well and you like the people, why not do it? I play guitar and drums in bands, but I've played the bass for several bands in the past because the gig was right. Fun music, the right people, great atmosphere. I've learned that those things are more important in the long run than what instrument I'm playing, because it's so hard to come by the right group. Find the right situation, and all of a sudden you're having fun no matter what you're playing!

Ok so the drummer told me that our jam band is better and that I nail some of the songs way better than the guys playing guitar. Holy shit how bad can these guys be

Still going to check it out, worst case I have new jam friends.

Maybe I should bring a guitar and the fortin in case...................

Digital Bootsy Jams, rescuing that cover band from the doldrums of non HOM-Dom ;)

Pagey joined Yardbirds on bass first and went on to create Led Zeppelin out of it. Lots of opportunities in any undertaking!

it's all about motown

ewf ftw!

sick scott! bass rules, when played well.

our music director is the sax player in the legendary 70s LA jazz band seawind and their reunion cd they just released on itunes has some of the best funky bass tone i've ever heard! huge punchy tight fat-i have had it in heavy rotation for the last month and i cannot get over how perfect the bass tone is, not to mention the amazing playing.
and one of our bass players, dean cortez, when not playing with us has this little side gig as bassist for hiroshima! and was one of the founding members of karizma with no names like landau, colaiuta, garfield, luke-he co-wrote the tune "heavy resin" for any karizma fans out there reading (the first track on the live document CD which neil stubenhaus played on)-he's been rocking the p-bass into an swr 12" workingman combo
our other bassist is grammy winning producer/vocalist jaymes felix who also sang with karizma and fronted tower of power-talk about funk!

Love playing bass .... after I messed up my hands a few years ago I can not do it for hours all the time any more.

Natas and Bass .... interesting.

I didn't know that before!! wow that's awesome!

I have been playing bass about as long as I have been playing guitar. I say go for it. I do have one requirement for playing bass in general, I want the guitar players to be as good or better than me. If not, than I want to play guitar, as I think that would make the band stronger. This may sound selfish, but I look at it for the good of the band. I played bass in a band in College and learned alot from the other 2 guitar players who were both better than I was. It gave me something to work towards.

What I find interesting too is that there is a bad stigma about guitar players playing bass. Bass players that only play bass seem to really dislike guitar players playing bass. Just ask over at talkbass.com

Dug the bass out from the pack of the pile-o-fiddles, needed 1 1/2 turns on the rod to get the thing to play it has been so long

RUSTY!

Right fingers are not up to stanards and my right thumb is sloppy as hell right now, odd jazz chords down low do not work well in the mix.

Anyone who thinks they have a bullet proof amp play bass through it, the Natas had walls shaking earlier

Good luck Scott! And just use the bass amp at the practice spot as your rig. Then you keep more money for guitar gear which is all that matters anyway. :)

 I play just about anything with stings .... where do I fit in ?

I actually have had people start to apologize to me when I tell them I am playing bass with a band. Like I was going in for surgery or lost a loved one. People are idiots....
:) I have always been a better guitar player than the people I have played bass with and could care less. I will cover what ever is needed for the band and do not worry about what instrument that is. Like you said what ever is best for the band.....

Oh .... and I love playing bass.... it's better than down tuned guitars.
