it's in our nature to kill our idols. That's why we talk about how much they suck.

I was playing my quad preamp, then I looked at my jazz chorus, then I looked at my rack equalizers, then I looked at my ADA MP-1, etc.................

I realized I play a bunch of metallica gear   :aww:

thats it......i think he rocks and i dont give a shit who thinks he doesn't

Never Denied it.

One of the greatest bands ever.

They've evolved into something different that is not what they use to be. But they still write some great songs and kick ass live.

I was with you right up until that last sentence.

i love what Metallica used to be...i still think all the albums up to Justice are metal masterpieces, and Ride the Lightning has some of the best tone ever (i dont like the MoP or Justice tone as much). after that though...man i cant even listen to the Black Album hardly anymore, except for Of Wolf and Man. seeing what they used to write and play, and seeing the "new songs" that there are videos of on YouTube...sure they can still play the old stuff and rock it out, but the newer stuff is just crap. id still think they kicked ass if they still wrote good tunes (no matter the genre) but they just dont write good songs IMO. at all.

aside from all that...they seem to always have good tones live, and id still love to have a Mark series amp  oh and an ESP Explorer!

Their sound changed as they "grew up" (sobered, aged, etc)

I mean, it's not like Bon Jovi. Have you heard their latest piles of steaming shit?

I'd hate myself for being part of that - except I'd like the money...

It might help if you looked at Black as a seperating point from Metallica 1.0 and Metallica 2.0. Load/Reload aren't bad by themselves, but yes, in the context of RTL/MOP/Justice, it is quite a shift. They were young, pissed at the world, and hungry. Load/Reload - they sobered up and calmed down, but still kick ass.

It's more of a subdermal ass kicking instead of in your face style.

I think we'd be much more forgiving with Metallica and their evolution into Muzak, if Lars wasn't such a douche. :poke:

For me, my Metallica fandom is more in a state of recovery than denial.

I grew up on 'tallica, after Cliff it was just never the same for me. I gave up after wearing the grooves off the Black album (yes, vinyl LP).

I respect what they've done but the tunes they're kicking out the last 10 years have been nothing to write home about. In my opinion.

And yes, I would about kill to be as rich, famous, loved and hated as they are. Spastic vibrato and too much wah be damned.

I like old metallica, never stopped. Even like a fair bit of newer stuff (not St. Anger though ;)), I'm playing Leper Messiah at school today

Most won't like my post.
First, R.I.P. Cliff Burton.
EVERYTHING after his passing has been complete garbage. Especially the black album.
At first I thought the explanation for that records huge success was maybe because in the early 90's the mainstream started accecpting heavier music (like grundge). But then if you listen to that album it just a good heavy POP album. As their mass appeal increased they became more and more irrelevant. HOWEVER, their contribution to music and the inspiration they've given to guitar players can not be measured. Rest in place Mettalica.

Am I the only one who doesn't really care for Metallica, old or new? It seems like everyone, everywhere I go, talks about "Old Metallica" being the best thing since sliced bread. I mean, they're not bad, but I don't find them all that great either, especially with Kirk's vibrato at the helm. Their tone was never good, and the drumming was mediocre at best.

sadly i do look at the Black album as the transition point...and i hate doing that LOL ill say that i like a few of the songs on Load and Reload (and Reload is better than Load as a whole, i think), but compared to their older stuff (pre-Justice) the songs arent too well written. IMO that was because of Cliff, who had a musical theory and composition background. Justice they went ape-shit and had these huge complex songs where some of the parts could have been made into smoother transitions. Black was where they said "screw the complexity...my brain hurts!" LOL short, easy to remember songs. and after that, i see black LOL

so its all opinion and all that. i know there are lots of bands that have changed or whatever, but still kick ass (Megadeth...still plays metal but it is a bit different than the earlier stuff). Dave still kicks ass and writes great tunes...Metallica not so much.

Metallica was my first real foray into metal...with the Black Album ironically. so they were a big band to me, and those older songs really have great memories for me, bad vibrato and all (hell, mine aint that pretty either!) you dont have to like metallica...i aint gonna hold a gun to your head

and for the record...i think Megadeth is the better band \:D/

That's the big thing with me. I feel Megadeth is way better, as well as a slew of other bands. I also like how Megadeth still has the ability to write good music. ;) I used to be a huge Metallica fan until I started listening to other music. Now, I can barely listen to them. Nostalgia just doesn't suit me, I guess.

yea...i dont listen to much 'Tallica these days. ive been jamming Ride the Lightning at work (my favorite Metallica tone), and while it is my favorite Metallica album, it still pales in comparison to Rust In Peace, Peace Sells, Countdown...trying to play what Dave does sometimes is hard enough...watching him play it flawlessly, faster than the album, AND sing it all at the same time...makes me wanna do this

tried to post a link to a video of them playing Take No Prisoners live in Rio in 1991, but YouTube is messing up for me

youtubes still not working for me for some reason...ill figure it out later. i dont feel like messing with it right now
